Scale Rust

Scale rust is a fungus that affects draconic species. It causes the scales to appear rusted and unclean, primarily affecting those with a more naturally lustrous appearance, such as metallic dragons. The infection isn't lethal, but if left unchecked it can infect the creatures brains. Aside from the discolouration, afflicted creatures suffer from weakened scales, restricted mobility and mild to severe pain in the affected areas. As the infection progresses, the creature's mind begins to go feral until all that's left is a rusted, feral beast that acts aggressively to any who approach it.
Although it primarily affects metallic dragons, other species of dragon can also catch the disease. Even lesser draconic species, such as wyverns, wyrms and lindwyrms, have been known to be susceptible to the fungus. It evens infects draconic humanoid species, such as the Pogonians and beings with draconic heritage.
Aside from affecting certain mortal humanoids, the disease is feared by many cultures because of the threat it can pose to settlements. Although the majority of people are immune to the fungus, the affect it can have on the aggression of a draconic beast can be devastating to anyone unlucky enough to find themselves in the beasts territory. As such, it is common for adventurers to be hired to slay Rusthide dragons, primarily to snub the infection before it spreads to other dracon's.
There is no firm cure, however symptoms can be lessened and progression slowed down by use of healing magic, or even the use of Grace of Puraeus mixed wih Glowmoss to form an ointment which is applied to the affected areas regularly to prevent the fungus from spreading.
