Promotions

A Promotion is when a worker evolves from a lower form into another, more highly paid work-title. Promotions come with much social and economic benefit, and are fought over fiercely by employees in the running for it. Depending on the role in question, this fight can involve actual bloodshed and/or high-explosives. Employees crave Promotions almost as much as they crave Retirement, having long since convinced by the corporations that it is a way to a higher station in life. Some particular cults of capitalism even consider promotions to be akin to a spiritual transformation, one that transforms you from a lower form of life into something more refined and pure.   In theory, Promotions are based on merit, hardwork, and factors actually related to the tasks being done. In reality, it's much more arbitrary than that and luck is much more important than talent. Some people know how to catch the eye of executives much more than the actual work they do. But if they look like they're hard at work and they talk in the right way to make the higher-ups like them... Well, that's much more likely to get them a Promotion than doing work good.   Still, Corporations generally do want people who do the best possible work in the positions to do that work. Unfortunately, corporations aren't really all that good at it. The Peter Principle is alive and well in Megacorpolis, and employees who are good at their work often find themselves promoted to their level of incompetence.   Some employees move side-ways rather than up the ladder. Perhaps moving from production into management, or research into HR. These souls are usually considered traitors by the departments they left behind, and viewed with great suspicion.  

Titles!

The best part about a promotion is that you get a shiny new title! There's nothing quite like showing off your accomplishments like updating your title on the social media app fo your choice, then bask in the adoration of your friends and the envy of your enemies. Oh yes, let them see and tremble.   As corporations grew to rival first cities and then nations in size, the old structure of titles weren't granular enough. You can only have so many of one kind, after all. Like a cancerous cyst, the number and types of titles have grown to a near terminal point (in that if you print them out in a list and drop them on someone, you will kill them). Here's a short list to whet your appetites and make you go back to your office with renewed vigor so you too can earn a Promotion.
