Kingdom of Vilia

The Kingdom of Vilia, like its neighbors, is a constitutional monarchy headed by a descendant of the Grandmaster-King Richard the Great. Vilia alone among the Three Kingdoms remains under the rule of a direct member of the mainline House of Delea; as of 2929 AT, the monarch is Thomas II.

Public Agenda

The Vilian tax system is remarkably relaxed, and has been so for centuries. The poorest of citizens is known to pay almost if not outright nothing in taxes; through this policy, Vilia shares its immense marine trade income with each social class, and successfully encourages public works and infrastructure projects unrivaled elsewhere in the Midlands.   Immigration, especially that from city-states across the Firenze Sea, is significantly restricted in the present day, as overpopulation and overgrazing has begun to plague the Vilian countryside.

History

William Delea, crowned as King William I of Linia, died from a brain hemorrhage in the late evening hours of the 19th of Taifa, 366 BT. Shortly before midnight, his will was unsealed by his most trusted advisors, and revealed William's plans for the disparate Midlander tribes that he had spent much of his later life assimilating and integrating into his kingdom.   William's orders were for all territory north of the Manasse Causeway to be detached from Linia and refactored into two brand new states, which he named based on words derived from prehistoric inscriptions that predated the kingdom's rise: Vilia for the lands between the causeway and the foothills of the Jade Mountains, delineated by the Oecus river; and Dalia for the foothills and mountains proper to the river's northeast.   Through these orders, William intended to fulfill an obligation he had placed for himself in regards to the Midlander tribes that inhabited these lands. Much of his conquests had been bloodless in nature, kept peaceful with the cooperation of local chieftains, and this was due in no small part to his repeated promises that these tribes would not be seen as children of Linia, subjects of a foreign kingdom; but as coequal founders of a new era, equivalent in citizenship and stature to any Linian subject, and free to share in the spoils of peace.   By the 12th of Beldri, William's orders had been completed, faithfully and to the letter. Edward, the second of William's sons, entered the settlement of Yandarma and, in the presence of the Grandmasters and the city's important officials, declared himself the first King of Vilia — though not as Edward I, but as Edward II, in recognition of an ancestor. This day continues to be celebrated as Vilia's founding holiday.

Trade & Transport

Vilian-affiliated mariners hold a near-monopoly on seafaring trade upon the Sea of Mice, which has earned the nation the nickname "the Mouse's Purse." Its coastal capital Yandarma is likewise known as "the Mouse's Jewel".

Suspicious peace

The Linian regency council suspects King Thomas of Vilia of covert interference in their royal selection process, which has led to souring of relations between the two nations.
