The Title of the Sovereign of Arakeen

The Sovereign is the title of the absolute ruler of the Lands of Arakeen. Lore holds that this title has existed unbroken since the elevation of the Aktannan tribe of the Serpent by the Red Dragon, Immolatus.

History

Originally, the title of Sovereign was the name of the first leader of the country of Arakeen, the half dragon son of Immolatus and the Aktannan princess, Keriza. Crowned the leader of Arakeen in 338 BC of the first age, Sovereign became the ruling title of the leader of the country. This is due to the fact that Sovereign covered himself in platemail that obscured his entire form. His descendants bore this armor as well and so to the outside world it appeared that the same Sovereign ruled over the kingdom until year 65 AC of the 2nd age.   It was in 65 AC, that the last Sovereign of the blood of Immolatus was slain. Arakeen went without a leader until the year 119 AC, when the Strife Lord, Cylence Coldeyes conquered the city of Arakos and named herself the Sovereign to rule in the name of the god of Strife: Omadon.   The line of Cylence ruled as Sovereigns until the great betrayal, when Omadon and his priests attempted to sacrifice large swaths of the people of Arakeen to empower his ascension to the ranks of a greater god. During the rebellion the Sovereign was slain, and the title remained empty until the followers of Viridian decided to reinstate it in the 3rd age to help tie their rule into the ancient legitimacy of the land.

Cultural Significance

In the 3rd age, the people of Arakeen see their Sovereign as a microcosm of their land: strong, unyielding and dedicated to the duty to Arakeen. The rank of Sovereign is considered unattainable for those not born into it, and the highest rank most in Arakeen would aspire to is one of the Vassel orders that serve the Sovereign directly.   The Sovereigns are a popular topic for art in Arakeen, and many masters of stained glass have created epic works of art depicting the Sovereigns of History. The only exception to this, is Sovereign Cylence Coldeyes, who has had most of her art removed since her Resurrection in the 3rd Age. In modern Arakeen, Cylence is not acknowledged as a Sovereign, even though her descendants are not removed from history as she was.
