Coins of the Lost Tithe

After Mittierim, the God of Adventurers, slew Gelder, God of Wealth and Trade, most of Gelder's faith was co-opted by the cult of Asmodeus and used to further the interests of the Nine Hells.   However, it is said that there were members of the Church of Gelder who were aware of their Gods death, and disappeared before the cult of Asmodeus could claim them. Legend holds that these few faithful clerics managed to take a full tenth of the wealth of the grand Temple of Gelder in Sil'korma with them when they disappeared.   These clerics sought to keep the faith of Gelder alive secretly, avoiding both the forces of Mittierim's faithful as well as the cult of Asmodeus. These clerics started a secret society that infiltrated merchant guilds, churches and governments throughout the West. As the original priests died, they bequeathed the coins taken from the Grand Temple to their proteges and legend holds that the energy of their faith transferred into the coins which now serve as the symbols of the hidden brotherhood.   These coins appear to be ancient Gold Pieces from Sil'korma dating to the mid 2nd age. A close inspection shows that the image of a merchant's scales are within the image of the Silver Ring on the backside of the coin.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

Other than allowing the members of the Secret Brotherhood of the Lost Tithe to recognize each other, it is commonly believed that the coins prevent the mind of the bearer from being read.

Significance

It is believed, by the few that know of their existence, that the Coins of the Lost Tithe contain the last of the Divine Essence of Gelder that exists on the prime material. Legend among the brotherhood hold that if all the lost coins are even brought together and taken to the remains of Gelder that floats in the Astral Plane, the god will be resurrected and present the bearer with a great reward.
