Anuba (A-new-ba)

Alka that are native to Skovasil, the Anuba resemble jackals instead of standard dogs. Protectors of the dead, the anuba are staunch defenders of crypts and burial grounds, and are constantly striving to thwart the machinations of the Necromantic Baronies.

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

Anuba are much more likely to pick up Elven or Dwarven, due to their close proximity to the homelands of the Alar dwarves and the Xoti elves.

Average technological level

The anuba believe that keeping a body preserved helps keep a spirit strong in the afterlife, and thus utilize many embalming technologies and preservation techniqiues to keep bodies intact in their giant crypts.

Common Dress code

The anuba dress lighter than most races in Skovasil, as their fur provides them with a level of protection against the chill winds and cold temperatures.

Art & Architecture

The anuba often build their building and structures with underground accesses and tunnels in mind. The view traveling through the underground as bringing them closer to the Underworld and reconnecting with the spirits of the departed, and thus often craft large subterranean worship rooms underneath their homes.

Birth & Baptismal Rites

Anuba babies are born blind with their eyes closed, and the parents must lick their eyes clean and aid them in opening them.

Coming of Age Rites

All anuba are taught the basics of burial rites and embalming, so that they can perform acts of last rites should they lack a priest in the immediate area. Many anuba who seek to become warriors will set out on a hunt of a particular undead with the guidance of an older and more experienced hunter, and are often sent to train with the Alar dwarves of Liorhim

Funerary and Memorial customs

All anuba are entombed in the center of their capital city Onam, in a massive crypt known as The Palace of the Dead. The anuba believe heavily that ones possessions will accompany them to the afterlife with them, and thus are expected to be entombed with all of their worldly items.

Common Taboos

Necromancy of all forms is forbidden among the anuba, who view their fallen dead as sacred warriors deserving of the afterlife. It is believed that the only anuba that rise as undead naturally are those who Anubis has judged unworthy of even annihilation. Tomb robbery is also a capital crime, and a caught offender will be mummified alive and then be bound to the tomb, forever forced to guard the target of his crime.

Common Myths and Legends

A majority of anuba worship Anubis, the alkan god of the dead. They believe Anubis judges all souls who pass through his realm, and the souls of the alka that he finds that have lived unworthy lives, are fed to his his herald and consigned to oblivion.

Beauty Ideals

Anuba value cleanliness and purity, looking down upon those who dwell in filth and squalor.

Gender Ideals

Anuba society cares more about age then gender, and the oldest member of a household holds the authority on how the house is run.

Courtship Ideals

Anubas always mate for life, and an anuba who loses their partner never looks for a new one. They remain faithful to their departed love in the hopes that they can be reuineted in the afterlife. The only exeption to this is when one partner is transformed into an undead, in which the surviving partner grieves for their permanent loss and are allowed to move on a new love.

Relationship Ideals

Anubas are very protective and familial, with family members often inheriting property from an older member when thy pass instead of finding their own home.

Major organizations

The anuba are the primary founders of the Dead Guard, a coalition of city-states and alliances of the races of the Free Lands to combat the forces of the Four Necromantic Baronies.

Encompassed species
An anuba replaces the standard alka traits of Animal Minded with the following trait:   Dark Alka: Anuba gain a +2 racial bonus on Stealth checks, and Stealth is always a class skill instead of Survival. This bonus increases by 1 for every two hit dice the anuba possesses beyond the 1st.
