Synthroid Species in Masters of Illuria | World Anvil

Synthroid

During the Golden Age of the Old World, androids had become commonplace, filling many laborer and other positions for their organic counterparts. Artificial intelligence software, while advanced, had only achieved success when applied to specific tasks or goals.

Then, strides in medicine and genetic engineering coupled with computational advancement resulted in a breakthrough. At the time, this resulted in what many called an “next generation android”, “synthetic humanoid”, or simply: synthroid. They were a step beyond an “android”, being a melding of the biological with the technical. Synthroids were not “built”, they were “born”, even if that birth occurred in a lab using advanced cloning techniques.

Before the Apocalypse, synthroids were second class citizens in any country they existed in. As a people, their ‘culture’ was in its infancy. As they encountered each other, they would remain in contact, share stories, develop their own mythos, and beliefs.

During and after the Apocalypse, surviving synthroids were left adrift. On their own, they developed means of producing children with their nanite swams. They gathered to form communities and cultures on their own, that held elements of the World Before.

Traits of the Bloodline

On the outside, a synthroid looks like a human with either pale or light blue skin. Circuit leads crisscross their skin, resembling tattoos, and their “hair” is actually protein strands combined with fiber optic filaments and nanowire. This “hair” is either brown, or black in color, turning blonde with extreme age.

It may seem they are a step beyond the other organic races, but in truth, they are only different. Synthroid lifespans are quite long, surpassing other races. But they have a definitive end. Physical attributes vary among different members, and must be developed like any person’s strength, dexterity and so on would. Their hearing is within normal human parameters, their sight is sharper being closer to that of an elf.

While it is common for tinkers to try and reprogram a synthroid, that task is impossible. Synthroids are a techno-organic species that biologically “grow” their own code and data access ports as needed. Their “personality matrix” is aggressively adaptive, constantly changing, evolving in reaction to what the individual synthroid experiences.

A synthroid is an omnivore, but subsist off of more plants and sunlight than animal protein. But what protein they do eat is lean animal meat.

Ancestry Traits

Self Replicating Code
You are immune to hacking and tinkering attempts to your positronic matrix, even if done through technomancy.

Lightning Rod
Because of your circuitry, you channel electricity more effectively than other species. When attacked by an electrical based attack, you take roll+Fortitude at Disadvantage. Failure means you take the damage and a -1 forward on your next roll.

Nanite Swarm
You release a luminescent cloud of nanites around one organic or machine target you touch to help them rebuild and regenerate. Roll +Fortitude.

  • On a 6- : Nothing happens.
  • On a 7-9 : The target rolls +Fortitude with a +1 forward. On a success, for every 1 of your Vitality you spend, you heal or repair the target 1 Vitality point up to a total of 6 points. You lose those Vitality points you spend until you can Rest.
  • On a 10+ : The target rolls +Fortitude with Advantage. On a success, for every 1 of your Vitality you spend, you heal or repair the target 1 Vitality point up to a total of 6 points. You regenerate those lost Vitality points immediately.
