Living Mana Physical / Metaphysical Law in Masters of Illuria | World Anvil

Living Mana

Mana, or Living Mana, is the primal or spiritual energy inherent in all people, living things and environments. This energy pervades throughout all the worlds in the Worldspace.

In the most ancient of times, there is a legend that a being was born comprised entirely of Living Mana. A goddess of magic. She became the shepherd of the Living Mana, interacting with beings across the Worldspace who tapped mana energies for their spells. She acted as a shepherd and teacher to those learning how to manipulate mana, or 'magic'.

However, as the story goes, this goddess was betrayed by another deific being. As a result, the shepherd goddess shattered into billions of fragments. According to this legend, these fragments became the Aes Sidhe.

Though lacking a deific influence, mana - magic - is still accessible through various means. The most well-known are technomages, cyphermonks, and the rare spellworkers known as spellsingers.

Manifestation

In its normal state, magic or mana is an unseen spiritual force interconnecting spirits, animals, people, deific beings and the varied environments across the Worldspace.

However, when a practitioner taps into this force, they cause an interaction at an elemental level. This produces an aura or visualization based on the closest related primitive element:

  • Red auras for fire and light
  • Blue auras for air and water
  • Emerald aruas for nature and powers of the mind and willpower
  • Orange-brown auras for earth and stone
  • Silver-Blue aruas for space and time

  • Localization

Magic ebbs and flows. This movement of magic resolves itself by the creation of both low mana regions and high mana regions. In areas of low mana, working magic takes a greater amount of effort on the part of the spellworker. With the opposite, its easier as the mana is easier to tap into for use.

However, the latter comes with its own dangers. Having easier access means a spellworker could draw on more mana than they can shape. This leads to a condition called Spirit Searing which can disfigure or even kill a spellworker.
