Great City of Valana

The Great City of Valana is a bustling trade hub for traders moving west into the Comeran Kingdom, expeditions heading east into the Neverending Steppes, and ships heading anywhere that can be reached by sea. This strategic location, along with the nearby fertile river lands, have made this independent city a very wealthy and bustling place, flourish with spices, wealth, and traders of all kinds. It is ruled by the The Shah, a mysterious masked figure rumored to be an exiled magus, who holds absolute authority over the city and it's people, but unlike may other such despots he shows great generosity and fairness in his rule, and is beloved by his subjects.
The Comeran Kingdom has long ago tried to take the city, but was repelled by the Shah's predecessor, a mercenary general of some stature named Rakathen. Since then, diplomacy towards the city have been cordial, but the Shah and his people do not trust the Comerans to hold back their imperialist tendencies forever, and maintain a modest but well-equipped standing army, as well as contracts with many mercenary captains, should there be need of them in the future.
