Baldr, God of Joy

(a.k.a. Óðinn’s Favorite Son)

Baldr was once the most beloved of the Æsir. So cherished was he that when his dreams began to warn him of his impending death, his mother, Freyja, made all beings swear an oath to allow no harm to come to him. The Æsir rejoiced when they were told that Baldr was now invulnerable to harm and set about making a game of testing the oaths by hurling attacks and projectiles at Baldr only to see them harmlessly bounce off. Everyone rejoiced that it was impossible to harm Óðinn's favorite son. All except Loki. The sly one watched with distaste and impatience and it sickened him to see how Baldr was immune to all manner of attacks. Through his machinations, Baldr was slayne and came to reside in Helheim, the realm of the dead. Legend has it, when Ragnarök comes, Baldr will rise from Helheim and shape the destoyed realms anew, leading to a new era where he shall rule with an iron fist.
