Baton-Gris Settlement in Manarchy | World Anvil

Baton-Gris

Defences

The only road access to the West passes a raised bridge which is now destroyed. It also used to have palisades on the sides of the bridge, but mostly shattered remains of it are still standing.

Industry & Trade

While a small settlement, a sizeable portion of traders manufactures furs and leather imported from other wilderness hamlets, worked as furriers, or variants like shoemakers. Those are on regular demand as the nearby mountaineer geography demands rather sturdy shoes and equipment. A now abandonned small iron mine was also exploited, and ressources transformed by the local blacksmith for usually mountain gear. There were also some in-house traders for jewelry and arcane objects, which they dealt with the mage tower as well from time to time.

Infrastructure

Aside from regulars roads, the settlement invested in stone bricks from other settlements trade routes as components to connect the town more easily to Vent-Reclus, the mage tower inhabited by the Order of Magisferum, which assisted to accelerate the construction. Two bridge connect the stonework road, allowing th pass through some deep rifts. The settlement also have a domed stone housing used to collect and secure food and goods during the winter, which is guarded by the viscount's guard in case of famine.

Guilds and Factions

Tundra's Gold Guild: Originally founded by the merchant Gildor Mantel, which got a nobility title as a gift for his services, the Guild controled the import/export of raw materials and transformed goods made of fur in town. While not ruling properly the place, they were the most influential in term of trade.
House Lavielle: A noble house, usually known for arcane heritage, fell over time to lower influence due to heirs having less and less talents for the fields. They remained the ruling house of the small town by authorisation from the Order of Magisferum for services to the mages organisation and kingdom, but their influence and strength was heavily questionned by most.

History

The origin of the settlement came after the Order of Magisferum, while trying to find a strategic venue for their instalments, needed a nearby settlement to ensure supplies like food and goods, including various components. This need was helped by the ruling class as a regiment of settlers was sent to build a small town near the tower, which was also influenced by the discovery of a cave containing veils of iron and other mineral valuables free to exploit. The trading routes developped over time and helped the tower becomes self-sufficient with the proximity of the settlement, which remained rather stable over generations.   The town met his ruin at the Battle of Baton-Gris , where arcanic monstrosities spawned by accident made a bloodbath of the unprepared townspeople, and also the Prince with his personnal batallion which was settled nearby for political reasons.

Tourism

Originally visited by traders or arcanists eager to get an audience in the tower of Vent-Reclus, tourism was rather low in this remote village, having few other interest to come in such a harsh geography.

Natural Resources

The Gecko-eyed Mine was used to gather ressources, mostly iron, and occasionally some precious stones.
