Sergei Torr

Sergei Nicolas Torr

Sergei Torr is a small crime syndicate currently residing in the Toxin Branch in the Outer Ring of Renga. He is by no means the largest crime lord Renga has to offer, and is even widely considered a stepping stone to richer, more illegal underground activities. Despite this, Sergei is on the rise, always looking for ways to cut corners and elevate his status. He is known for his wit and his charisma, armed with a smile that's saved him from more trouble than anyone would like to admit. He's remarkably young for the life he's built himself, on which he's made himself rich mainly in dealing drugs. He's nearly constantly on the run from law enforcement, but he's a small fish, only considered threatening because of his connections and his pretty face, as well as his complete lack of hesitation to commit identity fraud. He knows when to lay low, and is remarkably adept at slipping through the fingers of all who wish to do him justice. Additionally, Sergei is an individual who discovered how to fan out his magical aptitudes, allowing him to perform more types of magic than simply his Air magic that he was born with. In addition to Air, he's mastered Mending and Fire, but attempting to adopt a third foreign magic would likely kill him, so he severed his connection with alchemy, the science through which the Magi can learn other magics than the ones they were born with. These special skills have been instrumental in him escaping police custody, as well as maintaining his living based on crime.

Physical Description

Special abilities

Sergei is a master of Air Magic, Mending Magic, and Fire Magic. His favorite one to use is Fire Magic, but his favorite overall is Mending.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Sergei Torr was born Diego Nicolas Mano Riviera Santos Ulloa, the youngest of three children to Vanessa Riviera and Manuel Mano. He had two sisters, Eloísa and Carlota. The Mano family were originally a rich family belonging to the Air Core of Renga. Therefore, Sergei's original magic was Air. He was notably slower at mastering the craft than his sisters, leading to great frustration for a young Sergei. It was his lack of initial magical talent that lead him to turn to other skills he could harbor, and he started with lockpicking and pickpocketing, which he learned from a few neighborhood kids.   When Sergei was fifteen years old, he discovered that his family was broke. His father had a crippling gambling addiction, as well as an inclination to make rather poor investments. He told his sisters, and the three of them swirled themselves into a panic until their parents finally broke the news to them. Their family essentially fell apart after that, coming to a head when Sergei's father killed himself and his mother checked herself into a mental institution shortly thereafter, leaving the children with almost nothing to their names.   Sergei refused to resign himself to a year of sitting in a foster home with the possibility of leaving Renga altogether looming over his head. He knew his only real chance at a future was in the capital of Mallowa, where he could make himself rich if he only got a foothold in the most profitable market; drug dealing. He tried to convince his sisters to go with him, but they both steadily refused, always having had better moral compasses than Sergei.   So Sergei set out on his own, building a reputation for himself and lying low until he turned eighteen, when he was essentially free to function as an adult. He became skilled at pretending to be somebody else, and perfected his smile until he was irresistible. When he was a mere twenty-three years old, a suspicious old man approached him, claiming to be an alchemist. He'd received word that Sergei wasn't a master of Air magic, and promised him that he'd help him both master it as well as other magic types, if he was ambitious enough, in exchange for a large sum of money and a trip to the other side of Mallowstone as soon as possible. Sergei learned the man to be Eugene Alvorn, and took him up on his offer, allowing him to master Air, Mending, and Fire magic.   Eugene, as an old man with a somewhat estranged family, now relies on Sergei for assistance, and what started out as a purely transactional relationship morphed into a real friendship. Neither of them would ever say it out loud, but their relationship mirrors that of a father and a son. Eugene's actual son, Ben Alvorn, owns a successful magical wares shop in the Mending Branch, and him and Sergei find their way to each other not nearly as often as Sergei would like. He's madly in love with Ben, but knows that it would put him in danger to settle down with him. One day.

Sexuality

Sergei's gay, and while his career would be jeopardized by him choosing to settle down with one partner, he's had numerous flings in the places he's hidden out in, not staying with the same person for more than a few weeks at a time. His one exception is Benjamin Alvorn, the son of the alchemist who taught him how to harness the powers of multiple magics naturally foreign to him. Sergei and Benjamin find their way back to each other time and time again, but are continuously separated by Sergei's profession.

Education

Before his family's bankruptcy, Sergei was enrolled in one of Renga's best private schools, located in the capital of the Air Sector. From the ages of fifteen through seventeen, he was enrolled in a local school near his new home, which he was known to ditch frequently.

Employment

Sergei is technically self-employed, but he does recognize his status as definitively subordinate to the more powerful crime lords within Renga's limits. He makes most of his living in selling illegal drugs and putting even smaller drug dealers on his pay roll, but has been known to dabble in stolen art.

Mental Trauma

Sergei was the second person in his family to find his father after his suicide, just after his sister Eloísa. The sight of his father's corpse, as well as his broken down, weeping sister was enough to send him into an extremely angry mental state that he expressed by burying himself deeper into crime.

Morality & Philosophy

As a small time drug lord, Sergei's morality isn't exactly glowing. He's not above cheating, lying, stealing, and hurting others, but for what it's worth, he tries to keep his hands out of anything especially shady. Murder, armed robbery, and kidnappings are all considered off-limits to him, as he's entirely involved in his business for the money that comes from selling an illegal product, not committing indisputably morally wrong acts.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

One of Sergei's long-time goals has been to find his sisters. As far as he knows, both of them left Renga shortly after their father committed suicide and their mother checked herself into a mental institution indefinitely. He hasn't been able to find them since, despite putting his best trackers on the case. He eventually wishes for them to join him in his efforts.   Due to Sergei's complete enamoration with Ben Alvorn, he goes out of his way to send him tokens of his love whenever he can, and is constantly motivated by an urge to see him again.

Vices & Personality flaws

Sergei's two weaknesses will always be his sisters and Benjamin Alvorn, the three people he considers the most important in his life.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Selena Basil-The owner of the tavern that Sergei lives above. They have an uneasy relationship, as Sergei knows that Selena could turn him in at any moment, and Selena knows that Sergei has connections to some very scary people. Jordan Snyder-A barista at the tavern. One of Sergei's closest allies, who he's put onto his payroll and who he trusts to help him conduct business from his limited hideout. Carlota & Eloísa Mano-Sergei's sisters that he hasn't seen since he was seventeen, who he misses and vows to find one day. Benjamin Alvorn-The man Sergei considers to be the love of his life, the son of the alchemist who taught him how to harness the magics of other Magi. Ferdinand Bluefeld-A powerful, powerful crime lord also hailing from Kal. Sergei would never consider a man of his caliber his friend, but the two have most certainly relied on each other in the past.

Family Ties

In addition to his previously outlined relationships with his sisters and mother, one of Sergei's cousins, María, is an attorney that Sergei calls upon when he needs help, and in exchange he covers her wife's expensive medical bills in a neighboring country, as well as paying for her visits.

Religious Views

A long time ago, Sergei believed in a higher power, but faith has since left him since the tragedy with his family. He hasn't prayed since he was fifteen.

Social Aptitude

Sergei's charisma is the single most important factor of his career. His confidence comes to him as if out of thin air, and the easy grin on his face has helped him do business with countless crime lords.

History

When Catherine Rojo was fifteen, she was taken hostage by a Cedarian gang that her father owed money to. After watching the deaths of her mother and two of her siblings, Catherine was rescued by Eugene Alvorn, an infamous alchemist. With his raw, unfiltered power, he rescued Catherine, her brother, and her father from the gang.   After that encounter, Catherine considered herself indebted to Eugene, and kept in contact with him when he visited Cedar. However, as Eugene aged, he no longer had the energy to make the journey from Renga to Cedar, and so he began to send his disciple, Sergei, on his behalf. Sergei was five years younger than Catherine, and his charisma matched Catherine's no-nonsense personality well. The two quickly became friends, and were brought closer due to the fact that both of their fathers had committed suicide. As a councilwoman, Catherine could never officially endorse a crime syndicate like Sergei, and especially not one who was illegally practicing alchemy, so she keeps her mouth shut, but turns the other cheek when word reaches her of Sergei's nefarious deeds down in Renga.

Nicknames & Petnames

Upon their first meeting, Sergei called Catherine "Cath". He has not done so since.

Shared Secrets

While Catherine knows both about Sergei's involvement with organized crime and his lack of an alchemy license, rendering his alchemy-acquired magics illegal, Sergei does not know about Catherine's affair with Sorza Abernathy, as although Catherine trusts Sergei, she couldn't risk that information falling into the wrong hands.   Surprisingly, Catherine is completely unaware of Sergei's complete enamor for Eugene's son, Ben. Catherine and Sergei have both been around Ben at the same time, but Sergei happens to be very good at concealing his emotions, and has, in fact, never told of his love, except to confess to Ben himself.

Wealth & Financial state

Sergei is extremely wealthy, wealthier than his family was before their bankruptcy. He's smart about how he handles his money, keeping most of it in multitudes of carefully monitored accounts.
