Rengan

Due to the sheer size of Mallowstone's capital, Renga is obviously home to an extremely diverse and culturally varied set of people. Therefore, the Rengan ethnicity is distinct from a simply Mallowan ethnicity due to the niche culture shared by the people. As Renga essentially operates on its own fundamentally different plane, Rengans will be basically entirely distinct from even Ferso, the next town over.

Naming Traditions

Family names

Common surnames from some of the older, more prestigious families will end in things commonly associated with nature. For example; -wood, -stone, -leaf, -stream, -star. These families also generally belong to the Core magic groups, as those are far more affluent.

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

The vast majority of Rengans speak Mallowan and only Mallowan, as it is relatively uncommon for its inhabitants to have been exposed to something either outside of Mallowa or in a more linguistically diverse area of Mallowa, as such places tend to be far from the capital.   However, the Rengan vernacular is startlingly distinct from other types of spoken Mallowan. The dialect is punctuated by its lower tones and clipped words, and is almost instantly recognizable to someone who isn't from Renga.

Average technological level

As it is the capital of Mallowa, Renga must be up to date on every technological advancement readily available. Renga is home to Mallowa's most prestigious inventors and entrepreneurs, who share their findings for the good of their city.

Common Etiquette rules

Common respect among the Magi is the largest pillar of etiquette within Renga, and holds true even for opposed elemental sectors. Respect is to be expected between peoples who haven't met, to create an aura of familiarity and help eliminate anxieties. Respect, however, doesn't have to boil down into a cold, detached, formal affair. For the most part, Rengans approach respect with an easy smile and a kind gesture, a casual reminder of the fact that they are all one and the same.

Common Dress code

More prestigious Magi are often expected to don their magic affinity's robes for formal events, like parties and things, but there are no technical laws set in place about it. The only law set in place regarding dress code is to outlaw public nudity.

Common Customs, traditions and rituals

In almost every house in Renga, regardless of magical sector, one can expect to find flowers. The type will vary based on what those specific flowers mean to the household, but whether flowers are presented in a vase, photographs of flowers are hung on the wall, or rough sketches of flowers litter a home, flowers have come to be associated with Rengan culture based on a long-forgotten ritual from early settlers.   Other cultural traditions are determined by magical sector.

Funerary and Memorial customs

This issue boils down to a division between the magical sectors.

Common Myths and Legends

The Vaults beneath the Polished Heart have long been a spectacle for whisperings and scary stories to be passed around Renga. They're a very secretive area, most commonly believed to be housing riches and other valuable items, but the Vaults still hold the record for the highest number of conspiracies throughout the entire capital city.

Historical figures

The names that are likely to be known to all Rengans, regardless of their education level/interest in long-dead Magi, are Grif and Sara Renga, a brother and sister commonly known to have founded Renga's capital city.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

As all civilizations do, Renga goes through different beauty fads that change over time. Recent polarities include robe hemming, temporary runic tattoos, and tucked-in collars.

Gender Ideals

Renga is diverse in its culture, practices, and above all else, people. Therefore, gender conformity has no place in Mallowa's capital, and products aren't sold according to gender so much as they are according to price and comfort. It's not uncommon for an average Rengan's outfit to be something entirely androgynous.

Courtship Ideals

There is some tension between what is expected of courting depending on if you're in the Inner or Outer Ring. The Inner Ring tends to skew traditional in such polite manners, and courtship is generally known to consist of a public, albeit brief, declaration of one's intentions, followed by at least one gift. Courtship also skews older in the Inner Ring, too, with pressure sometimes put on Magi in their early to mid thirties.   In the Outer Ring, courtship is more of a casual endeavor. It isn't expected of anyone, there's no age in which people are pressured to enter a courtship, and the kind of quiet chivalry encouraged in the Inner Ring is nonexistent. The people of the Outer Ring tend to be younger if and when they court, starting somewhere in their mid twenties.

Relationship Ideals

The Inner and Outer Rings agree far more easily on the matter of proper relationship etiquette than on the matter of courtship. Both members of the relationship are always equal to each other, and are expected to treat each other with respect and courtesy. Violence and verbal abuse are offenses punishable by law, and children are often taught how to behave in healthy relationships. Due to these factors, the divorce rate in Renga is significantly lower than other major Mallowan cities.
