Vexic

Vexic is the ancient language of the Magi that died out thousands of years ago, although a semi-revived new form of it is spoken in small concentrations throughout Renga, Mallowa's capital. Sometimes referred to as neo-Vexic, this language is used in spell incantations, curses, and hexes. @Jayport, the capital of the Water Core, contains the highest number of speakers of any one city in Renga. According to the most recent Rengan Population Survey , with 121,430 Magi self-reporting that they are at least conversational in Vexic. The Water Core is the only sector in Renga where Vexic is taught in schools, starting when children are four years old, up until their graduations at the age of twenty.   Echoes of Vexic can still be found in many Magi family names, most notably the Chiefmage of the Earth Core Rita H. Pvitslakka, who comes from a long, old line of Magi.

Geographical Distribution

Vexic originated with the Early Magi, although not much is known about them. Their language was assumed to have been spoken heavily among themselves, but then when @Mallowan became the popular language of the region, the Magi adopted it instead. As the overwhelming majority of Mallowans are non-Magi, it was only expected that the language would overtake Vexic.
Spoken by
Common Phrases
'Vyast', which is the Vexic translation of 'ward', most commonly used for magically locking doors. 'Qurits Dostyo' used commonly in Renga as a greeting or farewell. 'Corvha sunt' a common expression used after a baby is born, or they first use their powers. 'Cortali sunt' to be said at funerals, coming from the same root as the above expression.
Common Female Names
The Vexic word for beautiful, 'Dhapie' is still somewhat regularly used as a first and middle name, although it is much more prevalent in use in the Core Sectors than in the Outer Ring. Notable uses include the recently-deceased Air Chiefmage, Zanda Dhapie Northwood, who was named for her mother, Dhapie Beza.
Common Male Names
While Daphie seems to be the only female name that has survived throughout the weathering of Vexic in terms of popular use, several male names trace their origins to Old Vexic. Three different words for 'scholarly', 'Khartvi', 'Smirta', and 'Yhenzdilo' have been translated as popular male names Harty, Mita, and Yedlo.
Common Unisex Names
The translation for the old Vexic word for good, 'Nakfitar' has long been disputed, resulting in several different spellings and diminutives. These include, but are not limited to: Nakar, Naka, Akfi, Akfit, Nik, Nika, Nikitar, Afitar, Afi, Afit. Any version of this Vexic word is a long standing traditional middle name among Magi, although particularly bold parents will give their children any one as a first name.
