Personal history

Rose's family fell into debt when she was very young, and in order to provide for them, her father Genry, a skilled mason, went to the mines to work off his debt. Years passed and the father of the young gnome Rose always sent home any wages he had earned to ensure his family had been cared for. Unfortunately, Rose's mother fell ill while her father was away. The sudden sickness brought about her demise extremely quickly, and within a week, she had passed away. Seeing that nothing more had been keeping her in her small town than her family ties, Rose set out to find her father. Days of travel, and Rose finally made her way to the mines, and was able to find her father. For the first few months, while it was certainly not an ideal situation for a young gnomish woman to be spending time with her father, Rose found contentment and joy in helping around where she could. Her father would carve small figurines for her from some of the softer stones that were mined, and because of his skills, they were afforded a private cabin in the settlement outside the mines.   When Kyre Malkov took control over the mines, Rose noticed things began to change. Where before the miners had been given ample rest, and relatively safe working conditions, the situation in the mines began to quickly get worse. The miners were forced to work harder, longer, and with less food. Equipment began to deteriorate, and resupply was always running behind. With his magical maul, Genry was one of the few who didn't have to worry about his equipment failing on him, so he continued to lead expeditions further into the mines on his own. Rose watched as her father took up the slack to ensure those of his group were as well taken care of as possible.   One day, Genry was on an expedition to a mostly unexplored area of the mines when disaster struck. A cave in occurred, and Genry as well as his group were trapped behind a massive slab of stone. Using his maul, Genry was able to slowly clear a path through the stone, piece by piece. Slowly running out of water and food, the group grew more and more desperate. Pushing himself harder and harder, Genry kept working long after his companions had fallen from exhaustion, and the sounds of his efforts rang down these abandoned shafts without ceasing. Rose, having found out what happened waited without sleep on the other side of the collapsed tunnel, hearing the constant hammering and knowing her father was still alive.   On the third day, Rose looked up to see the rubble shifting, and shortly afterwards, a small hand reached through. Grasping it, Rose cried out in happiness. The hand quickly pulled back, and pushed through the hole was her father's maul. Rose, realizing that exhaustion had finally taken hold on the other side, began working away at clearing the stone herself, working long into the night, and finally clearing a space large enough for people to begin crawling through. Genry, more concerned with getting his group out of the mines than anything else, helped each of them out of of the cave first. When the last member of his group was through, Genry began the task of marshaling the last of his strength to crawl through. Pushing his way through the rubble, Genry made slow progress, and could feel the stones shifting under his hands. Just when he was able to see the end of the tunnel, a deep rumbling sound could be heard. Rushing through as quickly as he could, frantically pushing himself along the stone faster and faster, Genry reached out with his hand...   Saddened by the death of her father, Rose took up the nickname, Sledge, and took over the position of her father. Proud of his honorable nature, she did her best to take care of her friends, the previous troupe of her father. Finding that she had many of the same skills of her father, she grew attached to her new family, however was always bitter about the lack of precautions that led to the death of her father, and slowly, thoughts of revenge against the one who had caused the catastrophe began to burgeon in her mind.
