Dragonbone Mountains

This dividing mountain range is many things, beautiful, terrifying, mysterious, little known, and mostly unknowable. It stretches upward in jagged peaks through the center of Egg Island like the spine of an island sized winged beast. Small spurs rise up east and west of the major range, giving the impression of wings.    Often wrapped in fog along the westward facing slopes there is always a feeling of mystery to those who observe them. Few dwell nearby, and few have attempted to penetrate their foreboding borders. A few trails allow partial access, but many have tried to push deeper without success. At least those who have returned report no way through, the ones who never return cannot speak, or choose not to do so.

Geography

A range of mountains that run mostly north-south through the center of Egg Island and out into the southern waters, making it very hazardous for shipping. A young range, the peaks are high and quite jagged with very few navigable routes. It is generally well-watered, and numerous streams flow out of the range, both eastward and westward. They are not large rivers.   There is evidence of volcanic activity within the range as well, but not so violent as to cause much distress among the island's inhabitants, at least those on the west side.

Ecosystem

The mountains are home to many forms of both flora and fauna. While the higher ranges of the mountain peaks are treeless and harsh, lower down the slopes live deer and elk, bear and wolf as well as smaller creatures.    Forests are common and stretch out westward past the confines of the mountains. The variety of trees is high, pine, fir, hickory, oak, beech, aspen are represented as well as many others. There are shrubs, and bushes filled with berries during the fall, and ferns, fungi and bracken take their places in shade and sunshine.

Ecosystem Cycles

Throughout most of the range there are distinct seasons, with winter being very severe in the far north, and fairly mild most years in the far south. Bears mostly hibernate, and the Dire Wolf seems to be able to hibernate or not. The herbivores move down out of the mountains where they can, to find food not buried in snow.

Natural Resources

It is likely that the mountains have many natural resources, but they are so difficult to explore, that whatever might exist there is generally unknown. A few rugged individuals live near the mountains and provide limited access to the wealth that they find there. Most known is Spinify Village, up the Virre River from Teller Town    Wood, dried mushrooms, furs, some gemstones, are part of the resources found.
