Surgeon Profession in Malgrave | World Anvil

Surgeon

While once respected and necessary to most cultures in the world, the profession and knowledge has been rendered obsolete by the introduction of magic.

History

In the Age of Beginnings, surgeons were needed with the constant dangers all around. There were battles for resources, frequent wars and roiling elements all around. While some people had known of healing magic at one point in time, the gods had completely cut off support to the mortals of Malgrave. The healers of the time used stitches and medicines, splints and bandages to mend their community, spending countless hours of trial and error to perfect their skills. The people that took the time to obtain this knowledge were highly protected at one time, because they had the knowledge and dexterity to turn a mortal wound into a week of bed rest.   They became especially important during the Reclamation War. With all of the wounds sustained between fighting the celestial and fiend forces, making a soldier last as long as possible was the biggest help to keeping them from being overwhelmed. It even got to the point where enemies would seek out the surgeons to take away the only people capable of caring for the injured. When the war was over and the gods allowed use of their powers for healing miracles it still took a while for the profession to lose its necessity as trust was not still prevalent in most groups of people. As the good gods finally gained trust after their millennia of lending assistance, the number of clerics in the world grew, gradually removing the need for surgeons. With the decline of surgeons came a decline in knowledge of the body and proper health as magic made it easier to just make things better without understanding.
