Papillon Species in Malgrave | World Anvil

Papillon

Papillon are a moth-like race of humanoids created by the goddess Nyx. They are widely regarded as the second native species of Malgrave and are considered extinct.

Description

Appearance

Papillon are a relatively short race, standing between four and five feet tall. Their skin is most commonly a greyish, paper white and they have eyes that are typically a solid black with no discernable pupils or irises. Their hair can be nearly any color and kept at whatever prefered length by each indivisual, but it is almost always very thick and fluffy. Around their neck is a collar of fluff the same color as their hair. Where they start to differ from most humanoids is the pair of moth-like wings growing from their back that nearly reach the floor when standing. They also have four arms, each with a hand that has four slender fingers each. From their head grow antennae, usually large and resembling feathers, but some were once seen without. These were typically considered a more butterfly-like varient, which would also lack the fuzzy ruffle around the neck, but their wings still folded the same. They tend to only live about 20 years after reaching maturity at 2 years old.

History

Early history and supposed creation

The goddess Nyx created the Papillon during the time of Malgrave's greatest turmoil, the Reclamation War. Their purpose was to be silent guides that could easily slip through the shadows, taking other mortals to safety under the cover of night. From the beginning to the end of the war, they guided non combatants without faltering in their duties. When the war was over and tensions between the mortals began to rise over resources and perceived evil, the would end up siding with the Mescalero, a fellow creature of the night. The hunting and killing of these misunderstood beings extended to the Papillon for this transgression until both races were wiped from the known world. While some claim to have seen Mescalero throughout history, the same cannot be said about the Papillon.

Society

During their time, the Papillon were very welcoming to all. They would form small little villages that were called Waypoints. Even after the Reclamation War, these little villages were barely more than camps consisting of around 50 or less Papillon at a time. Generosity was part of their way of life and they would give often to whatever communities were around them, even to their own detriment. Although few were considered warriors, self sacrifice seemed to be ingrained in them from their original design from Nyx.
