Echo Elk Species in Malgrave | World Anvil

Echo Elk

Echo elk are massive elk that live in the tundra of the Evertwilight. They are dangerous when provoked, but typically gentle creatures as they have few natural predators that wish to risk getting injured by them.

Description

Appearance

Echo elk are white in fur color, with the males sporting massive racks of antlers. They are in the deer family of animals, which gives them the unsuspecting ability to roar, catching many off guard. Echo elk stand about 10ft tall at the shoulder and have much wider chests and thicker necks than other elk in the world.

History

Echo elk have developed to withstand the harshest of cold environments that Malgrave has to offer. Their name comes from their booming calls that echo through the valleys and tundra. When directed correctly, these creatures are known for actively causing avalanches and landslides, burying assailants or forcing them to flee, least they be crushed. Many can spend hours tracking them by these sounds, often traveling further than one would think because of how far their calls carry. Hunters rarely track them, only taking the opportunity when they have them within their vision because tracks and calls can draw them far away from shelter if they're not careful. They are not easy beasts to take on alone either, as they are massive, powerful, and can drop a mountain of rock, snow and ice on those not prepared for them.

Winter Wanderers

The echo elk are sacred to the Duskmen. A single elk can feed an entire Ilatka for weeks. They can also be kept as companions, as their presence is a deterrent to many of the larger predators that might not fear taking on the small tribes of humans.
