Plains of Despair

The Plains of Despair occupy the central part of continental Malatoria. A vast expanse of flat grasslands and gently sloping hills, the Plains are known for their incredible variety of dangerous humanoids and monsters. This variety of dangerous creatures and the lack of large bodies of water have kept more civilized races from settling the Plains, thus they effectively serve as a buffer between the eastern and western sides of the continent. The Plains take months to traverse by normal methods, which means that border settlements turn a good profit off of outfitting would be travelers and adventurers before making the hard trek.
Halfway across the Plains, near its southern edge is the Hold of the Hammerlord which serves as a way station for travelers, a home for mercenaries, and a shelter from the monsters that stalk the Plains.
In the middle of the Plains of Despair are the Sands of Despair, an unnatural magically created desert.
