Life after death for the Sorendenese
The Sorendenese believe that Mithra has bargained with his brother Donai and that those who lead a good life while under Mithra's watchful gaze are judged worthy and are escorted by Donai himself to eternal reward and peaceful rest in the death god's kingdom once they die.
It is said that the souls of those not so blessed linger for a while but then enter the dark realm that exists between the worlds to wander aimlessly in never-ending pain for eternity lost and alone. Some of these lost souls, either through force of will or dumb luck, sometimes make it back to the world of the living as the restless dead.
For this reason, the Mithran ceremony of the dead involves the incineration of the bodies of all the recently deceased in the eternal fires of the Temple of Donai as part of the Dawn Ceremony, which occurs with the rising of Mithra each morning.
This ceremony is believed to give the family of each individual that has passed one last chance to try to get their loved one the blessing of Mithra. It also ensures that those who are not so blessed have no corporeal form in the land of the living to possibly possess if they find their way back from the dark realm.
