Candle callers
The general name used for a number of local individuals and businesses responsible for the calling of the number of candles since dawn as communicated to them by the local Temple of Mithra .
As well as performing this much-needed service—there are no clocks in this world—candle callers also act as town criers and sources of general information. The crying of messages is a paid service—think advertising—while many candle callers will also give information on any topic they know about, for a price.
Candle callers will try to protect their reputation for truth to protect their business and promote return customers, which means that the information they have will be generally true, but perhaps limited.
Candle callers can be recognised by the quality (and loudness) of their voices and diction and also the special tan-coloured tricorn hat they wear while going about their business. Those employed by a business will also have some insignia indicating who they work for. For example, the Wing & Prayer Messenger Service , which is the largest company providing candle callers in Constantine, has the insignia of an orange circle representing the sun god Mithra that sports outspread wings on the side.
