Fire Moth

The fire moth is a magical species of moth, that, due to its 'fire heart', is immune to flame and heat. As their name implies, fire moths are vivid orange and yellow. In the past, fire moths were hunted by humans for their hearts, which were conveniently used for cooking and heat. When humans learned agriculture they understood that it would be possible to breed the moths domestically.

Basic Information

Genetics and Reproduction

The female Fire Moth is able to lay about 50 eggs over 3 weeks, dying shortly afterwards. The moth attaches her eggs to a surface with a special adhesive. Eggs hatch after about 10 days. That time can vary slightly depending on the temperature. Fire Moth Breeders try maintain a constant tempreature in the moth incubation rooms.

Dietary Needs and Habits

As larva, fire moths eat their egg right after hatching. They then eat almost anything they can find including plants, hair, fur and wool and people's clothes. Adult fire moths are not nearly as ravenous as the larvae.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

The fire heart is the only and most valuable resource obtained from the fire moths. In the past, it was used mainly for heating and cooking. Technology handles those demands today and fire hearts are used for more complicated things, such as amplfying pyromancy spells.

Fire Moth Farms

The techniques for breeding fire moths have not changed much throughout history. Moths are kept in rooms with constant temperature of about 25 degrees Celsius (77 Fahrenheit). This is the ideal temperature for the efficient growth and reproduction of the moth. Male moths are not harvested, mostly because they die shortly after mating. Female moths are harvested for their hearts shortly after laying eggs. Their body is opened and fire heart is extracted from it and secured for transport.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Fire Moths can be found all over the world in almost every environment. However, today most of them live in capitivity and according to the scientists would be unable to survive in the wild.
