Captain's Log #3

Noxday, 11th Zenith 211 EoL:

I must admit I didn’t sleep well last night. If it wasn’t for the sheer exhaustion, caused by the fights in that smuggler's den, I probably wouldn’t have slept at all. The sound of that ripper going off in the spider cave just awakened too many horrible memories of war. The sound of the explosion along with the screams of many soldiers, enemies, and friends alike, kept torturing me.   Thankfully today was a day full of smaller errands, enough time to get my thoughts together again. I am their leader, after all. Showing weakness might result in getting my crew hurt or worse. I've sent Mini, Hotshot, and Doc off to organize us a ship for the journey to Diernum tomorrow. Thankfully, Birdy had a contact they could hit up. Otherwise finding a ship for transport to Diernum would prove to be difficult, due to the current dome and military situation. Captain Firebeard, what a ridiculous name. Let´s hope that so-called Captain actually does a good job and isn’t just all about bravado and stories. I have to keep my crew safe above all. Nonetheless, Mini managed to get a deal, as always.   Tiny, Lucky and I ventured out to talk to the Ferrium Mining company and inform them of the smugglers' den we uncovered, which was holding a lot of their merchandise. A very curious place, it seems that this company has a lot of political pull on the Island. Well, if you bring all the riches from the mines to the Empire, I guess there have to be some rewards involved. I am suspicious of that bookkeeping guy we encountered, stolen gods at that magnitude don’t just happen without assistance from the inside and people involved in the higher echelons of the company. The mining company, understandably, didn’t want to just give us money without proof so Lucky showed them on the map where they could find the den. We also took a job with the company to check out one of their mines where they supposedly dug into something unexpected. Information was very sparse again and I'm sure some details are kept from us. Mining companies always play with fire, digging down into the dirt and uncovering ancient things while trying to rob the earth of its minerals. Sooner or later one excavation will uncover an ancient evil. There are things lurking in the dark, stories told in the Monastery of ancient evils deep underneath our feet.   Back at the Wolfs den we met up again and talked about what to do next. I must admit I had some decision paralysis when It came to deciding if we go to Diernum first or to the mine first. I’ve seen leaders make the wrong decision and a lot of soldiers die because of it. I don’t want to make the same mistake, but I have to be assertive too, as not making a decision in time could result in catastrophic results as well. Once the decision was made people split up to take care of some more errands for the rest of the day. Doc, as distraught as we usually come to find her, went out to collect some herbs and spices for her various potions, when suddenly a loud boom just shook us all. Running outside we saw Doc stand in front of a portal and just telling us she had to leave for a family emergency. It was very weird as it seemed like divine intervention was just deforming the dome as Doc stepped through and was just suddenly gone. This woman sure has always been a mystery. At least she didn’t really seem worried, let's hope wherever she is that she is alright and that she comes back to the fold in some way again.   I separated myself from the group for a moment. Something I try to avoid as Tiny is still a loose cannon, he is set on vengeance and sees every Drow as an enemy. While I agree that most Drow we encountered so far, were bad people, I'm sure not all of them are rotten. I trust the others will keep him in check for a bit. I needed to go see the tournament area. I've scoured the list of participants, in hopes that I would see some familiar names from my days as a Marine. Unfortunately, it was only a team registration. Every arena I come across, I check to see the names of my lost brothers. I haven’t seen them since that last catastrophic mission as a Marine. We always talked about the tournaments and making a name for ourselves. I still hope to see their names, but the sad reality is that they probably died in battle or have been captured. However, I will never give up on that hope.
