Broken Hand Guild Organization in Maelan | World Anvil

Broken Hand Guild

The Broken Hand Guild is the biggest and oldest Thieves Guild centered within Sedem Lux and exerts their control not only within the City but to an extend even across its borders.

Activities:

• Accepts contracts to acquire items   • Fences stolen goods   • Pays officials for discretion   • Lends and retrieves money   • Offers protection/extortion/blackmail   • Has specialized people for forgery, counterfeiting   • Runs a gambling ring (dice games, cone game, cards)   • Strong ties with the Beggars Guild (Information and unseen passage) and the Smugglers Guild (import-export).

Guild Control:

The Broken Hand is an old and powerful Guild, who has several politicians and wealthy patrons under their control. Different parts of town are known to be under the Guild's control/protection. This leads to fights with uprising gangs/ rivalling thieves, but they are not really a threat.   Certain low key guild activities get ignored by the city watch in exchange for regular payments. People know about the Guild's existence, but its name is only whispered. Corrupt and fearful authorities downplay the problem of the guild while pocketing big piles of hush money. The government knows that the guild ensures relative peace within the lower tier districts. Some idealistic guards and authorities still think they are free from the Guild's influence, but they are in the minority and tend to vanish mysteriously in the night.

Guild Security:

Every district under the control of the guild has a few hidden safe houses, which are often occupied by one of the 4 Bosses. Multiple security personnel are scattered around the area, disguised as beggars, common folk, or other citizens. Physical security includes reinforced metal doors, bars on windows, and architecture that provides safety, such as lookout posts, murder holes, and traps, often enhanced with detection or destruction magic. The traps are mostly death-type or confining-type traps. Simple Alarm spells are refreshed 3 times a day.

Intelligence:

Locals who are afraid of the guild provide invaluable intelligence on watch patrols, strange newcomers, any criminal activity not perpetuated by the guild, and anything else that seems like it would be important. Those who pay protection to the guild or who are being blackmailed provide intelligence in exchange for many things - not being killed, not being embarrassed or the leverage of their business.   Sometimes high ranking Rogues are embedded into various areas of the government, other guilds and the military. These spies are very often “deep operatives”, operating in their area for a long time to avoid suspicion.   By far the most useful information however is provided by the Beggars' Guild. The queen of Beggars has established a network of eyes and ears everywhere around Sedem Lux. Rumors go as far as saying that the queen has mild telepathic abilities, being able to see through the eyes of her beggars and even rats on the streets.

Assets:

The assets of the guild come in a multitude of forms. Suns, magical items, documents, reputation, favors, passage, alcohol, and so on. In some extreme cases, the guild can even call upon government troops should they have the need to. All these assets solidify the position of the guild within Sedem Lux and are the foundation of their influence.
