bulette
Bulettes, often called "land sharks", are huge burrowing predators covered in thick, armored plates. Their origins are unknown, but most intelligent people don't spend enough time around them to find out, if they have any choice in the matter.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Bulettes are heavily armored monstrosities that are difficult to escape and even harder to kill. A bulette has a bullet-shaped head like a shark's, with a massive mouth filled with razor-sharp teeth. Its legs are short but powerful, tipped with blunt claws that allow them to dig through loose dirt at alarming speed. It is covered from head to toe in heavy, bony plates, including an angular crest just behind the head resembling the fin of a shark. Its eyes are small for a creature of its size.
Ecology and Habitats
Bulettes thrive in temperate hills, burrowing through the loose soil there in search of prey--which typically includes literally any other creature in the area, though for some unknown reason they will refuse to eat elves. They are solitary creatures, seldom tolerating the presence of any other creatures in their territory.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Bulettes are exclusively carnivorous, usually waiting underground until it senses movement nearby. As an ambush predator, the bulette will wait until its prey draws near before exploding out of the dirt to either bite at or leap onto the potential food source. Typically, bulettes would swallow they prey whole, unheeding of any clothing or equipment that might come along for the ride; its powerful stomach acid makes short work of anything it eats.
Additional Information
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Bulettes can see perfectly in the subterranean darkness, but when they are on the hunt they rely more on their ability to feel the vibrations of their prey moving around.
