Laguvenna Settlement in Lyr | World Anvil

Laguvenna

Laguvenna was once a bustling port in Pendari, boasting a cosmopolitan population. Laguvenna was considered a jewel among cities, its many canals and bridges making it a destination worth visiting even if one had no business to pursue there. Then, one day, the entire city went silent. Merchant caravans approaching the city gates found them barred by piles of rubble in front of them. Ships approaching the harbor found it blocked by scuttled ships, despite the lighthouse still functioning on some nights. Animals refused to go near the city willingly. Teams of explorers that climbed the walls to get inside were beset by flocks of maddened birds that killed or injured with seemingly endless bloodlust. No one ventures to Laguvenna anymore without good or better cause and fewer return from attempts to discover the cause of the disaster or to loot the treasures within.   Laguvenna is divided into nine districts, each with unique attractions in its heyday and unique horrors since the disaster.

The Kennels

The slums of the city encompass the area north of the southern gate. The roads are paved, but in poor condition. Many buildings are in poor repair or partially collapsed, probably from before the fall in some cases. The ever-present birds watch those out in the open, but spacious sewers provide refuge from their glares. The city gate is barred from the outside. This district once housed a temple to Dranard, the god of death, and the adjoining graveyard.

Ghildenburg

The rich and wealthy of the town made their homes in this walled off district. Manors, town houses, and the occasional estate form the majority of the buildings. Ghildenburg was home to a temple to Tombar, the god of wealth.

Highblane

The administrative quarter was also home to the city's archive. Old tomes and ancient knowledge may be found here. The district also houses the city's town hall and temple to Uminare, the goddess of magic.

Gromskilde

The industrial district houses numerous shops, warehouses, and other commercial buildings. Most prominent are the dwarven fountain and the bathhouse nearby.

The Docks

Laguvenna’s connection to the ocean, this district contains various piers and docks. Several ships have sunk in the harbor, blocking it. Only the Wistful Lady remains afloat and in eerily good repair. Towering over everything is the lighthouse, which lights up every night at high tide.

Sevenbridge

This district gets its name from the seven major bridges spanning the Tillwater River. Of these seven, only the Griffin, Wyvern, and Unicorn bridges still remain. The district was a population center for the moderately wealthy. Now, some its streets are littered with the bones of the dead, while others are eerily clean.

Greengarden

These are the former hunting grounds of the nobility that were converted to a public park for the citizens of Laguvenna after the formation of the Pendari Republic. Now it is overgrown and the plants and animals there are particularly vicious.

Rivergate

This district of Laguvenna encompasses two gates to the city, one via the river and one via the road, and the residences around it. The city gate itself is barred from the outside, but the walls around it show signs of people having climbed them: The walls have foot and hand rests chiseled into them and the occasional rope can be seen hanging from the battlements. The river gate is open, but inside, the district appears abandoned, the non-functional clock tower looming eerily over the silent streets. But occasionally lone voices or glimpses of shapes flitting through alleys can be perceived.

Northgate

This part of the city contains the northern city gate along with several inns, warehouses, and trade houses. The gate itself is barred from the outside. Before the fall, this district catered to merchants passing through or transferring their goods onto the ships moored in the harbor. Now the district is littered with piles of bones from merchants and draught animals alike, with trading goods lying untouched in the warehouses.
