The
Armigers of the Precept are a knightly order dedicated to upholding law and order throughout the Material Plane. Known for their vicious efficacy and extremely harsh and exacting trials, the Armigers are active across all of
Luquastra, lending their strengths to lawful crusades and being at the vanguard of battles against the forces of chaos.
History
The Armigers were founded as the continuation of a band of crusaders from the Venerated Kingdom of the Kair, one of the predecessor states of what would eventually become the
Republic of Fennerland. These crusaders fought in a brutal war against an invasion from the Abyss in eastern Fennerland, and received renown for their efficacy and mercilessness. Their leader was Holnyk Baretsson, a ranking member of the
Danisian order of
Kelemvor. He and his four comrades, all from different orders serving different lawful deities, agreed that their ancient teachings were too mild and bred weakness. Together, they formed the Armigers, headquartering themselves south of
Kairsmouth, in a keep built on a bend in the River Stamsard.
Throughout the centuries, the Armigers have been present in various conflicts, from the
Dergerian war on the
Marrens to the Defense of Jatham and the
Crescent Crisis. They are oft maligned, regarded by many as needlessly cruel and vindictive - complaints the Armigers easily dismiss as ramblings of the weak-minded. Yet their defense of law and order is unceasing, and they are as staunch as fighters come.
Organization
The core tenets of the Armigers of the Precept are order, discipline, justness, and endurance. Their teachings are based in various legal codes and picked passages of scriptures of the religions of divines such as Kelemvor,
Helm,
Loviatar and the
Red Knight, and rooted in the belief that one must be able to weather any trial that would weed out the weak. Armigers frequently meditate on these concepts, and partake in brutal tests and trials to prove their discipline and conviction. These trials typically include weathering pain of some sort, be it self-inflicted or not.
The Armigers of the Precept abide by the strictest form of hierarchy. They are led by the Durus, and below them, various ranks cascade down with absolute authority over all beneath them. Currently, the top position is held by Durus Seth Quarain. Armigers can rise the ranks by passing prescribed trials, starting with the defeat of a demon. After having defeated their first demon, an Armiger is considered to be a true ranked member of the order, rather than a mere recruit. These trials get more and more grueling as one progresses.
Law and order stands above all else to the Armigers. Typically, Armigers commit as many law books to memory as they can, so that they know in each jurisdiction what acts are criminal - so they can mercilessly bring down justness upon any criminal. They know no mercy as a rule, and anyone found in violation of a law or code - especially among their own number - are arrested and soon executed, without exception.
