Somal

Somal is a celestial body that aligns with the Sun and Croft to create a yearly eclipse. According to the Lucidiette Astronomers, Somal is a massive gas giant encased in a hard, but brittle crust that has crumbled on it's western side; exposing an abundant source of Eir inside.    The planet orbits a great distance away, so any Eir that finds its way to Croft is hoarded as a precious substance. During the Eclipse of Somal on the first of Janusus, Somal will flare and release amounts of Eir in greater quantities than on any other day of the year; leading the Lucidiette Astronomers to try to collect as much of the elusive substance as possible during these brief bursts.

Geography

Somal is a gas giant encased in a hard, but brittle, outer crust comprised of Eir Grain. It is unknown what landmarks are present on the planet, but the surface is a wash of desaturated blues and greys that spiral and shift with the flowing Eir beneath the surface. The crust then breaks off at the Ingress and reveals the inner Nucleus. It is unclear whether or not Somal is weakened due to this breach in its shell, or if the planet has adapted to its gateway.

History

Somal was "discovered" by Lucidiette Astronomers in 584 PW, though was always known by the people of Croft, as the Eclipse has been occurring for millennia. It was only the Lucidiette Mass who believed the planet had a connection to Thuumdalism and the Dream. As such, the Mass has claimed "ownership" of the celestial body as a holy site.    However Somal, and the Eclipse by extension, have been in the religions of Croft since before Thuumdalism, so their has been much debate over the legitimacy of the Mass' claims that Somal is unique to their beliefs. Though now such heresy is rarely discusses, and Somal is seen as a Thuumdalic entity of Cosmic power.
