The Church of Asmody

Nestled deeply within the heart of Kalaido, the Church of Asmody stands as a venerable yet niche institution, its origins intertwined with the city's very foundation. Central to its worship is a deity known as The Mother, her true name, Aellesynne, a closely guarded secret whispered only within the hallowed halls of the Church. Unlike many faiths in Eostrea, the Church of Asmody refrains from imposing rigid guidelines on worship or daily life. Instead, its distinctive essence lies in its singular focus, delving unwaveringly into the worship of the sole cosmic deity.
Aellesynne, The Mother, embodies dreams, prophecy, love, and healing, her most extraordinary domain being the vast cosmos itself. In stark contrast to other religions that recoil from the boundless expanse of space, fearing its uncontrollable malevolence, the Church of Asmody embraces it. Stars, celestial bodies, and the uncharted territories beyond Luceans are regarded as the sacred dominion of their goddess, an awe-inspiring realm tinged with both reverence and trepidation. The faithful do not worship her out of obligation for they do not believe she created nor cares for them, but rather because she represents an aspirational ideal within her expansive domains. This distinctive aspect of their faith in combination with the near universal distrust for outer space has maintained the Church of Asmody as one of the few facets of Kalaidoan culture that has steadfastly remained within the kingdom's borders despite Kalaido's extensive reach.
Long before scholars theorized about the Cataclysm, the Church incorporated eerily similar stories into its theological narrative. They depicted it as The Mother's wrath, a divine retribution upon a world that had dared to defile her cosmic realms. According to their lore, the Cataclysm spared only those possessing the potential to transcend their inherent depravity. However, the arrival of Oceanus shook the very foundations of their beliefs. This event triggered a profound reassessment known as the Convent of One, leading to a significant shift in their doctrine. The revised Canon acknowledged the Cataclysm as a random event, suggesting that The Mother possessed the power to prevent it but did not intervene, for while she was aware of Luceans, it was ultimately a tiny meaningless drop in the ocean that was her domain. This contentious revelation stirred dissent among the faithful. Yet, the unwavering support of the Kalaidoan Royals, staunch patrons of the Church, quelled potential schisms. The popular sway of the Royals among the Church's Kalaidoan followers ultimately led to the acceptance of the new Canon. It marked a pivotal moment, one where the Church of Asmody, in all its simplicity, navigated the uncharted waters of cosmic faith, standing resilient against the tides of uncertainty.
