Remnants
Remnants are creatures born from the magical power and strong negative emotions of the dying. Rather than simply dispersing into Dust as all magical life forms who die in peace do, the magical power of the angry, sad, or frightened condenses into grotesque, aggressive monsters who roam the world, attacking civilians until they are defeated. When multiple magical beings die feeling strong negative emotions in close proximity, their magical power will fuse and create a larger, powerful Remnant. If it is just one individual, the Remnants take much longer to form and are usually quite weak, they can be handled easily. It is common for Remnants to be used as a weapon of warfare against other nations, but it often backfires as Remnants will attack any and every living creature. Thus, careful considerations must be made during times of war so as to properly dispose of Remnants to avoid any harm to one’s military (and in turn, creating more Remnants). Another tactic commonly seen in the Primus Civil War is the strategy of drawing small groups away from the main force to dispose of them and the Remnant in a more controlled setting. It is common in war to join forces briefly to take out a Remnant who was attacking both sides, as it is critical to prevent the point of releasing too many powerful Remnants to handle.
No one knows if Remnants retain any consciousness, or if they simply exist to cause harm. Some notable Remnants in history include the Remnant attacking and keeping Oceanus from the surface (formed by the thousands of lives lost during the cataclysm) and the Remnant caused by the Magitech Liberation Front during Operation Exodus. The only way to defeat Remnants is to cause a significant amount of damage proportional to how many lives were used to form the Remnant. Due to the Remnants being beings purely made out of magic, physical weapons such as swords or spears are much less effective than magical weapons. Once a Remnant is defeated, it turns into Dust and is reclaimed by the earth. This has led to the formation of power-hungry criminal bands going around hunting magical beings, then killing the resulting Remnants in order to harvest its Dust after being defeated and sell it on the black market. The nature of Remnants has led to a greater appreciation for peaceful death. Families will often do as much as they can in their power to make their members comfortable during their time of passing, and all individuals are exempt from school and work when their loved ones are on their deathbed. There is also strong societal emphasis on completing aspirations and goals to ensure no invididuals have no regrets later on in life.
