Amber Knights

Structure

There are no ranks within the order although each knight is inducted by and reports to the Barron himself, or his Captain of the Guard. As an elite body, they carry out important tasks as they occur at the discretion of the ruler. They also police the city and its domains, and in times of war can mount up to serve as shock troops, mounted infantry or cavalry.

Public Agenda

To exercise the Barron's will. Keep the peace and repulse invaders. Serve as figures of mythic proportions to be romanticized and aspired to.

Assets

The Knights are typically seasoned adventurers or wealthy merchants who can afford to maintain their own armour, weapons and horses. Their only state sponsored materials are meeting halls, sigils and barracks. Being backed by the Barron though, on a whim they have access to his personal wealth (ie the city's treasury) in pinch hit situations.

History

The Amber Knights of Weinkauf started off as the personal guard and retinue of the Barron Cambrigan Ereldur Weinkauf. As he engaged in adventures and battles in youth, he gathered a following of capable adventurers. When the late Barron Gunder von Weinkauf unfortunately passed away, his son assumed the throne and his retinue came with him. As a monarch, he anointed them as knights and they took his sigil and colours for their order. Now a full time head of state, he lived his adventurous lifestyle vicariously through his knights, who continue to scour the lands. There are no real requirements besides the completion of 'Ten Epic Quests'. Which practically translates into a bullet point list of heroic deeds that are presented to the Barron and approved or denied. In practice, to become a knight requires carrying out personal tasks, often unsupported and at great personal risk, at the behest of the Barron. Their numbers scarcely climb more than a few hundred, but each knight is a hero of legendary status and are trusted highly by the citizenry for protection and questing. As the Barron looks toward taming the badlands, his volunteer army is stretched thin and militia unreliable, so he increasingly turns to his vaunted knights to accomplish the harder tasks that need doing.
