Ley Line in Lorrimor’s Legacy | World Anvil

Ley Line

A ley line is an imperceptible, nearly stationary conduit of raw magical energy that can stretch thousands of miles, and includes psychic impressions among its ambient energy. Scholars suspect ley lines imbue magical effects, thoughts, and phenomena to reality along their paths.   The concept of ley lines is part of the occult philosophy of cosmic biology, which suggests the planets of the Material Plane, and the material of other planes, is itself alive.

Appearance

Most ley lines are invisible to the naked eye, with the exception of those that pass through areas with high levels of ambient energy, such as areas of wild magic or negative energy. They move too slowly for most mortals to perceive, drifting only slightly over millennia.   A person can detect ley lines through spellcasting and occult abilities, which reveals them as colored streams of ghostly energy. The line's power corresponds with its color, following a similar pattern to the visible light spectrum: violet lines are the weakest, and red lines are the strongest.

Use in Ritual Magic

Ley lines can empower ritual magic by the ritual's primary participant tapping into one near the ritual's site.

Locations

According to a Letter to Professor Crowl from Professor Petros Lorrimor, the professors both theorize that Feldgrau, Carrion Hill, Illmarsh, and Gallowspire. In addition, the ancient Kellids most likely chose these locations for many of their burial mounds, monoliths, and other structures because of their "spiritual energies" and not because of any geographic significance.   The Fellowship themselves discovered a ley line within the Shrine of Cindermoor underneath Troll’s Tail and used it in a ritual there.   Most recently, while traveling through Versex, the Fellowship encountered red lightning ley line storms that seemed to weaken the barriers between worlds, including those of the Dreamlands.

Significance

It is believed that the ley lines have a direct connection to the imprisonment of the Whispering Tyrant in Gallowspire. The Knights of Ozrem possibly chose Gallowspire because of its geocentric location to the ley lines. The ley lines were then used to augment the strength of the Tyrant's prison.   Further more, by disrupting the ley line energy, the wards that imprison the Tyrant could be weakened, a feat that the Whispering Way is attempting to do. Also, the weakening or rerouting of the ley lines themselves could allow for the Tyrant's mind to wander further. Professor Lorrimor stated that this could be achieve by the follow:
  • Catastrophic-scale destruction of landscape itself, an act that would be noticed for miles around (this most likely has already been done due to the War Without Rivals and the Furrows),
  • Repeated use of reality altering magic,
  • Long term presence of reality altering outsider, and
  • Short term presence (no less than 4 days and 4 hours) of a manifestation of an Outer God or Great Old One (this was most recently attempted when the Keepers of the Oldest summoned the Spawn of Yog-Sothoth in Carrion Hill).
