Culture and cultural heritage
Effalians identify as anyone who can trace their ancestry to the original inhabitants of the lands unified by Roman Moore.
Common Etiquette rules
Common courtesy is paramount to most Effalians. Beyond that, a great deal of respect is afforded to the nobility.
Common Dress code
To Effalians, their work clothing is often their every day clothing. An exception is that during religious, marital, or funerary services, long flowing robes of warm colors are worn.
Art & Architecture
To an Effalian, art is most beautiful when it depicts great battles or is a representation of one of their chief deities. This is also shown in their architecture which is often simple and functional, with the exception of castles and churches which are meant to awe and inspire.
Birth & Baptismal Rites
When a child is born, a feast will be had amongst the family and close friends. Additionally, the hearth will be lit with a roaring fire where fragrant herbs will be burned in honor of Estanna.
Coming of Age Rites
Upon reaching the age of 15, many Effalians are gifted their own set of tools to whatever should become their trade in life. The daughter of a blacksmith may be gifted a hammer while the son of a minstrel may be gifted a lute.
Funerary and Memorial customs
It is typical among the poorer classes for the deceased to be interred into a catacomb in cities and larger towns. Usually the middle classes will be able to afford an plot of land in a communal cemetery that will service a family. Outside of cities, communal cemeteries are commonplace regardless of wealth. The only exception to this is in the case of the nobility. Nobles are commonly buried within family crypts that are quite opulent, depending on the wealth of the noble.
Common Taboos
It is considered disrespectful to not bow when encountering or when leaving known nobility.
