Enhanced

Enhanced were a Mankind's response to being forced to fight against forces of the Transhuman Alliance during the War of Purity. No human soldier could dare a fight against for example a mechanist warform. Even heavy infantry failed to survive a prolonged encounter. But Humanity at this point was heavily biased against geneengineering and, to a lesser degree, extensive cybernetic improvements. What's worse, the former case would require decades to work.
The result of that was the Warrior 2.0 project that resulted in a creation of the first Enhanced. A completely new form of soldier enhancement that, to this day, has spread throughout the Human Space. Almost all if not all of the 10 000 members states of the Confederation of Mankind (and the Solar Federation has from one to many blueprints for Enhanced development.

Composition

Manpower

Enhanced are typically deployed in small numbers. After the War of Purity and the Solar War it became quite rare to see them operate in groups bigger than squads of up to ten Enhanced operating as a sort of reconaissance/deep strike/special forces groups. It's no rule, however, as platoons of up to one hundred Enhanced are sometimes used as stormtroopers.

Enhancements

Every Enhanced is only in relatively small part a homo sapiens. The process of Enhancement includes replacement of majority of body with either biological or cybernetic implants dedicated to maximizing the physical output and other abilities. Bones are replaced with ones made from an extremely resistant (and lightweight) composites. Internal organs are replaced as well, their new versions much smaller, freeing place for completely new organs (biological or cybernetic) and the spare hearts, livers etc. The same happens to the muscles (both tougher and stronger) and skin (it's quite common for Enhanced skin to be highly resistant to burns, acid or even vacuum.
There are many such organ blueprints out there, just as there are blueprints for general organ placement. The end result is a warrior whose bones can repel bullets, and who can fight with maximum efficiency (or almost maximum one) despite multiple gunshots to the body. They are also typically higher (due to both surgical prolonging of bones and muscle system, and powerful growth hormones), with some of them reaching 2,5m in height. This has an additional bonus of making it possible to thicken skull (increasing survivability) without making the body be weirdly proportioned.
Enhanced are also stronger, faster, have massively improved reflexes, are highly resistant to hits and environmental threats. Due to being chosen from the best possible human material they are also highly intelligent and thoroughly trained.
It has to be said that despite the aforementioned procedures, Enhanced aren't by definition cyborgs. Many countries pick a purely biological Enhancement routes, seeing the cybernetic improvements as 'inhuman' and potentially dangerous (due to risk of hacking). Others go for cybernetic Enhancement, creating true cyborgs (often, in fact, closer to very humanlike robots with human brains). Some go the middle way, creating a complicated mixture of biological and cybernetic improvements.

Equipment

Enhanced are elite troops, and thus they are typically granted the possible equipment. From state-of-the-art powered armours and weapons to high grade archeotech equipment. Many of them further specializes their body and equipment for a particular combat doctrine, for example an Enhanced sniper possessing 360 degree of detailed observation, capable of detecting the smallest movement via small computer analyzing the feed in real-time, while also calculating the right bullet trajectory.
This potentially changes the Enhanced into one-man-armies. Of course, only until they make a mistake, enemy deploys their own Enhanced, or enemy forces turn out to be a bit too numerous. Then things change rapidly. It's no surprise that anti-Enhanced combat is an important part of training for any regular soldier.

Weaponry

Enhanced are quite unique in their choice of weaponry. It heavily depends on the way they were Enhanced. Snipers will be armed in magnetic or even laser sniper rifles. Stormtroopers will don a powered armour, a set of ballistic shield and some close-quarters weapon, and two machine guns on an mechanic arms hanging above their head. Heavy weapon specialists will wear an even tougher powered armour and for example an anti-tank gun or even an artillery piece. Enhanced anomalists might not have any weapons save for their massively augmented nerve system.

Logistics

Logistical Support

Enhanced typically require some level of medical maintenance from time to time. However, they are also typically equipped in certain level of self-diagnostic capabilities and most of them are teached during their training how to do overwhelming majority of things on their own. The only real problems are slightly bigger ammo consumption and a bit different medical needs in case of being wounded.

Auxilia

Enhanced are elites, and thus they are typically assisted by any other military unit that is in the vicinity and can assist them. Especially Heavy infantry tends to be used as a support to Enhanced.

Recruitment

There are two main types of people chosen for Enhancement. Some countries chose children (12-16 years old, typically) whose bodies respond better to the Enhancement procedures, especially on the field of growth hormones response. Such children are either children of already growned up Enhanced, military or political elites, or orphans trained in state facilities that shown 'promise' on the field of their support for their homeland. While such Enhanced are typically slightly stronger in terms of pure physical abilities, they lack experience and it takes them a while to gain it.
Other countries pick elites of their conventional military. Such recruits already possess both expansive combat experience and proper beliefs. Unfortunately, they are also much older, meaning that their Enhancement is in part less successful, with the physical output at least few percent lower than in case of children. It is, however, often seen as a more... morally positive choice, especially by the more politically moderate countries.
There are also various 'others'. Volunteers, especially those of higher social standing. Newly awakened anomalists. Average humans who received such an extensive damage to their body that only Enhancement can allow them to live again (and they are ready to risk spending some years on the battlefield to pay back for the Enhancement).

History

First Enhanced were created during the War of Purity. That conflict included the greatest deployment of Enhanced in history, as the Solar Commonwealth fielded entire divisions of Enhanced. The peak of this war was the battle of Noricum-V, where more than a hundred thousands of Enhanced were deployed (alongside almost five million of heavy infantry and fifty thousand loyalist pure warriors) to destroy remnants of the Dominion of the Pure.
Following the end of the War of Purity, Enhanced fell in numbers. The post-war Solar Commonwealth was in a state of perpetual political and economic crisis which greatly limited its potential to produce new Enhanced. Those that were inherited from the era of the war of purity suffered regular biological and cybernetical malfunctions due to less-than-stellar maintenance and the fact that they were all essentially rushed prototypes. This meant that majority of the Commonwealth' Enhanced simply died out, either during the Frontier Rebellion or the March to Terra campaign. Those that survived went renegade and joined forces of Discord, or deserted and either became mercenaries or joined forces of one of the hundred thousands planetary governments and warlords that began tearing apart the rotting body of the Commonwealth during the Unification Wars.
At this point the technology to create Enhanced was almost lost by Mankind. Merely few worlds retained the technological know-how to produce Enhanced, and most of them refused to apply the technology due to either moral concerns or the number of malfunctions occuring among the Enhanced. Situation changed during the later years of the Unification Wars, as improved versions of Enhanced were fielded by some countries (the first one of them was the Republic of Venus during the Solar War, immediately followed by Mercurial Confederation and Jovian Coalition). This not only showed that there was great potential in the Enhanced, but also forced other countries to deploy their own versions to counter those deployed by their enemies.
From then, the Enhanced spread throughout Human Space - and beyond, as both insectoids and berserks began deploying their own versions to, in turn, counter those deployed against them by humans. Today there are tens of thousands of Enhanced 'blueprints' out there, varying in power level and preferred combat role. However while their quality and variety improved, numbers did not. Enhancement costs rose, making Enhanced a decidedly costly investments. It is also an era of thousands of small governments, many of them fielding at best few dozens Enhanced (and sometimes merely few).
