Tor

For a fire is kindled by my anger, and it burns to the depths of Death, devours the earth and its increase, and sets on fire the foundations of the mountains.
— -- 2nd Law 32:22

Tor is the name given to the lowest realm, a place of judgment, exile, and dread. Unlike Sil, where the Divine dwells in light and glory, Tor is the place where the Divine turns His face away. It is not merely a realm for the dead, but a domain of disfavor, a spiritual geography for those cut off, cast out, or consumed by corruption.

Tor is not the natural destination of all who die. Tor, by contrast, is a place one falls into through rebellion, blasphemy, or the deep rejection of the Divine. It is a place reserved for the devils for their revolt against the Divine, and those who do likewise.

The Nature of Tor

Tor is called by many names in the old texts:

  • The Pit
  • The Place Outside the Camp
  • The Burned Valley
  • The Unending Fire

It is always depicted as a place of banishment, one that mirrors how the settlements cast out the unclean or stone the wicked outside their gates. Some traditions describe Tor as a smoldering lowland—not a roaring inferno, but a land of ash and choking smoke, where nothing grows and nothing is heard but the grinding of regret.
