Dragonborn

In their unending war against the humanoids blessed by the Divine, the Dragons sought to create warriors in their own image. Dragonborn were crafted as living weapons. Though they share the appearance of humanoids—upright and intelligent—they lack the spark of life given by the Divine. Instead, they are sustained by the arcane energy infused into them, a residue of the dragons’ own font of magic. This energy manifests in their most iconic trait: the ability to expel devastating breath attacks, mirroring the elemental fury of their creators. A dragonborn's breath weapon, whether fire, frost, lightning, or other destructive forces, is a direct reflection of the dragon whose arcane essence birthed them.

Autonomy with Purpose

While dragons are known for their greed, control, and mistrust of others, they grant the dragonborn a surprising degree of autonomy. This is not out of benevolence but cold calculation. The autonomy of the dragonborn serves a critical purpose: allowing them to make choices and pursue paths that even the dragons themselves cannot tread. Chief among these is the ability to wage war against the devils, who remain immune to direct retaliation from dragons due to their ancient pact.

Some dragonborn take up this grim task, becoming relentless hunters of devils. They fulfill the vengeance of their creators in what is often called the War of Lies, a shadowy conflict fought on the fringes of the world. Though the dragonborn are not driven by hatred in the way dragons are, many feel an innate pull to enact their creators’ will, finding grim purpose in the destruction of devils.

The Emissaries of Disaster

Other dragonborn, however, willingly surrender their autonomy, binding themselves to the service of their respective dragon. These dragonborn become emissaries of disaster, traveling ahead of their masters to strike fear into humanoid settlements. They demand tributes of gold, magic, and lives, promising deadly retribution if their masters’ demands are not met.

Such emissaries are extensions of their dragons' will, speaking with authority and power that can terrify entire kingdoms. They serve as reminders of the dragons’ reach and wrath, sowing terror in the name of their creators.

Society and Culture

The dragonborn exist in a tenuous balance between servitude and independence. While many choose to serve their dragons, others band together in loosely organized clans, valuing the autonomy granted to them. These clans often form their own goals, which range from carving out territories in the wilderness to seeking vengeance against the devils or waging wars on humanoid settlements.

Dragonborn culture is marked by a deep connection to arcana, as their very existence is tied to the Weave. They often revere their creators, seeing the dragons as gods or divine beings, even though they themselves are reminders of the dragons' folly and separation from the Divine. This reverence does not always translate to servitude, as some dragonborn see themselves as superior to their creators, believing they have inherited the strength of dragons without their flaws.
