Azer
The Azer are the corrupted counterparts of Dwarves, a grim reminder of what happens when self-control, the cornerstone of dwarven discipline, is lost. This transformation is a punishment wrought by their own internal instability, twisting their stone-like resilience into something volatile and destructive.
Transformation and Appearance
When a dwarf succumbs to emotional instability—be it rage, despair, or unbridled greed—their sturdy stone-like skin begins to fracture. These cracks glow with a searing inner light, and molten heat seeps from within, painfully refining their once-stony flesh into gleaming metal. Their eyes smolder like forge embers, and their breath radiates heat.
This transformation is irreversible, marking the Azer as creatures of chaos and destruction. The process is agonizing, often driving the afflicted dwarf into a frenzied state as their mind struggles to reconcile their new existence.
Temperamental Infernos
Azer are creatures of constant turmoil, their bodies and minds reflecting their inner instability. They are prone to violent outbursts, with their emotions igniting literal flames that spread uncontrollably. A single heated argument can set entire buildings ablaze, and a moment of fury can leave their surroundings scorched and ruined.
Unlike dwarves, who rule stoically over their emotions, Azers follow their every whim. Their presence is a curse to the carefully hewn halls of the dwarves, as even the stone can melt or crack under their oppressive heat.
Heat as a Weapon
One of the Azer’s defining traits is the heat that radiates from their bodies. This heat intensifies when they are affected by spells or significant stress, creating a dangerous environment for anything or anyone nearby. Metal weapons glow red-hot, wood ignites, and living creatures suffer terrible burns.
When pushed to their limits, an Azer can release all this accumulated heat in a devastating explosion, incinerating everything around them. This destructive act is both a weapon and a desperate expression of their torment, leaving scorched craters as grim monuments to their instability.
Behavior and Isolation
The fiery nature of the Azer makes them incompatible with even the most forgiving of societies, as their presence is a constant threat. They often retreat to desolate areas, such as volcanic regions or barren wastelands, where their destructive tendencies cannot harm others. In these inhospitable places, Azers fight amongst themselves, usually unable to be disciplined enough to advance or set goals as a community. However, there are times when their fury can organize them into a destructive horde, other nations be warned.
Legends and Fear
To dwarves, the Azer are both a cautionary tale and a source of shame. Stories of once-great smiths who fell to rage, or stoic leaders who lost their composure and burned their clans, serve as dire warnings to young dwarves. The existence of the Azer reinforces the importance of discipline and the dangers of letting emotion rule over reason.
Non-dwarves tell darker tales of wandering Azer appearing unbidden, setting entire villages aflame in moments of rage. Some speak of Azers forging terrible weapons in volcanic forges, crafting tools of destruction that rival even the finest dwarven works.
