Angels
Angels are celestial beings created by the Divine to serve Him in Heaven and act as extensions of His will throughout creation. They are beings of immense power and purity, embodying virtues such as justice, mercy, and faithfulness. Their purpose is twofold: to glorify the Divine and to assist in the cosmic struggle against the forces of evil, particularly the Devils and their servants.
Spiritual Warriors
Angels are the vanguard in the unending spiritual war between Heaven and the infernal forces of the devils. While this war often plays out in the unseen spiritual realm, its effects ripple through the physical world. Angels are tasked with defending creation from the schemes of devils, protecting the faithful, and opposing the corruption that seeks to destroy or enslave mortal souls. Angels fight in vast armies, wielding radiant weapons that pierce through the darkness of infernal powers. Their battles are unseen by mortal eyes but can be felt in the form of miracles, spiritual awakenings, or unexplainable protections. Though they cannot always directly intervene, angels watch over mortals, particularly the faithful, shielding them from spiritual harm and guiding them toward righteousness. Angels see the spread of Corruption as a grave affront to the Divine's order. While they may not always be able to prevent it, they work tirelessly to mitigate its effects and inspire mortals to resist temptation.
Messengers of the Divine
Angels often act as the Divine’s messengers, bringing words of guidance, warning, or hope to mortals. Their messages are typically delivered through dreams, visions, or rare physical manifestations. These encounters are awe-inspiring, as angels radiate an otherworldly presence that humbles even the most steadfast of mortals. Angels are also frequently the ones who deliver revelations to Aasimar and other chosen individuals, equipping them to fulfill their Divine missions.
The Power Behind Summoning
Many summoning spells used by faithful mortals are empowered by angels, who willingly lend a portion of their essence to aid in battles against darkness. These summoned forms, though not the angels themselves, carry their might and radiance, manifesting in forms defined by the caster. In this small way, angels may influence directly the physical world of mortals in accordance with the Divine's will.
This is not to say that all summoners might expect this blessing, however. Summoners deep in sin and ill work often receive the same power from devils instead, ensuring that their descent not be interrupted.
Angelic Interest in Mortals
Angels take a deep and abiding interest in the actions and faithfulness of mortals. As spiritual beings, they are profoundly aware of the significance of mortal choices and the eternal consequences tied to them. However, their ability to intervene is often limited to the spiritual realm, leaving much of the mortal struggle in the hands of individuals. Many angels are assigned as guardians to watch over specific mortals, particularly those who are faithful or destined for significant roles in the Divine’s plan. They often work subtly, inspiring acts of faith, courage, and kindness through thoughts, feelings, or seemingly coincidental events. Angels rejoice when mortals turn toward the Divine and grieve deeply when they fall into sin, reflecting their profound connection to the mortal soul.
Angels and Mortality
Though angels are vastly superior to mortals in power and understanding, they are not infallible. Their eternal perspective gives them insight into the broader tapestry of creation, but they sometimes struggle to fully comprehend the mortal experience. Some theologians believe angels marvel at the faith of mortals, as they themselves are constantly in the presence of the Divine and cannot experience the same trials of belief. However, the existence of the fallen devils serves as a grim reminder that even the purest beings can stray from their purpose, making them ever vigilant against pride and complacency.
Hierarchies of Angels
Angels are organized into a celestial hierarchy, each rank fulfilling a specific purpose in the Divine’s service.
- Seraphim: Closest to the Divine, the Seraphim are beings of pure worship, singing praises that sustain the heavens.
- Cherubim: Guardians of sacred artifacts created by the Divine, and of the Divine's glory.
- Archangels: Leaders of the celestial armies, Archangels are the commanders in the war against devils, often taking an active role in guiding mortals.
- Angels: The vast majority of angels, these are the warriors, messengers, and guardians who carry out the Divine’s will in the spiritual and physical realms.
Angels as a Reflection of the Divine
Angels are not merely servants but also reflections of the Divine’s character. Their radiance, power, and purity are manifestations of His glory, and their actions in the world serve to draw mortals closer to Him. As beings created to serve, they find their greatest joy in fulfilling their purpose, reminding mortals that true fulfillment lies in alignment with the Divine’s will.
