Wushengyu Language in Lingyichao | World Anvil

Wushengyu

Wushengyu, the Silent Language, is a language of hand signs and body movements. It is used by cultivators, usually when on night hunts where their target could potentially hear something that would make their job more difficult. It is a language with a small vocabulary, as its purpose is purely for night hunting, although some Jiaopai have added their own signs onto it to communicate privately without other cultivators being able to glean what they are communicating.

Makeup of Signs

The hands take one of three angles - folded up, folded down, or straight - and each finger has three positions - straight up, straight out, and bent. Those, combined with using either the right hand, the left hand, or both, provide a vocabulary large enough for cultivators to communicate what they are hunting, where it is, numbers, and basic plans to deal with the target of their hunt.

Dealing with Disabilities

If a cultivator has lost fingers, one of their hands, or lost the use of one of them, but is still capable of night hunting without any other issues, there are workarounds for dealing with their inability to use the full vocabulary of Wushengyu.   The most common of those workarounds is a Talisman that can provide the illusion of a hand and/or fingers for a period of a shichen; it is a more specialized variation of the general illusion talisman that most talisman masters are familiar with.   The second-most common workaround is using their spiritual energy to write out what they wish to communicate. Unfortunately, this can be problematic, because doing so results in the 'energy writing' glowing, so it can give their position away to potential enemies and/or the target of the hunt.
