"It is not a pretty statue. An artist would not have made it. No craftsman would accept such inconsistency. No merchant would sell it. Definitely no one would buy it."
A New Technique
Some of the smiths in
Cliffside had been requested to produce large metal tubes to be used as part of an expansion of the
Unseen River. Creating large sheets of the thickness requested and bending them would have been an incredible amount of labour. One man,
Remias Mori found a solution. They would build a casing, pour an incredible amount of molten metal into it, and let it cool. The smiths set to work immediately.
A Horrific Result
During the first attempt to create the tubes,
Remias was guiding the pouring of the molten hot iron when a rope gave out and the burning liquid coated him.
Remias perished and the other smiths learned a lesson about safety and about humility because in the end, it was not boiling metal that killed their colleague, it was pride.
The statue still resides near where the accident occured. No one forgets and everyone who sees it takes great care in their own work.
