Terian Monks

Reclusive Monks of Remedy

It is astonishing how the Terian monks have been unknown to the nation as a whole for so long. They are well known in the area around the Alsarat mountains but their reputation dissipates quickly as you leave the region. I wasn't even aware they existed until I met a family who had taken their child to the monks to cure an illness. The family told me how to get there and I found myself climbing the steep trails of Alsarat.   I was greeted with hospitality by the monks but they were not eager to speak to me about themselves. It appears that reputation matters little to them as long as they are left in peace. They told me that anyone can become a monk and that was clear when I saw the monks, race, age, gender, none of that matters if you follow their codes.   During my brief time there I walked their well kept gardens and saw plants I have never seen before. The medicines they make with them are also like none known to me. I was allowed to take part in some of the ritual exercises that they perform. When I left to descend the trails of Alsarat I felt refreshed.   -Excerpt from Arun Ovoo's Travels Around Grara

History

14 years after the storm receeded to the Floor and revealed the unending light the war veteran Yul Terian climbed the Alsarat mountains. He became sick on his climb and found one of the mountain plants could help him recover. He would continue to return to the mountains and others would join him, until in 18RB he completed construction of Terian Monastery.   Terian and the others sought peace from what they had witnessed during the Time of Darkness. They developed the basic tenets of the monastery. The original purpose was to help people overcome their trauma but as time went on they began to take in orphan children. Eventually, it became open to anyone who was seeking peace.

Tenets of Faith

The Terian monks have three pillars of improvement.   Biyana (Pillar of the Body) is the first pillar. It emphasizes health and fitness. If the body is not aligned one cannot move onto the second pillar because the mind will be distracted by the body.   Oyana (Pillar of the Mind) is the second pillar. This pillar emphasizes accepting ones actions and moving past negative thoughts. If one is not at peace inside, they are not ready to aid others.   Taiyana (Pillar of the Land) is the final pillar. This pillar is about teaching and helping others. Only monks who have reached this stage are allowed to tend the gardens.
