Tabletop Campaign
Motivation
To create a setting for a tabletop campaign and hopefully a series of tabletop campaigns. A series of games can build on the changes created by past campaigns creating a deeper experience for returning players.
Varied Fantasy
Genre
Sparse fantasy hides magic away in the far corners of the explored world. The songs and dances of the
Fae are magic but they are hesitant to teach those who embrace civilization. The mighty sky islands and continents are high fantasy to us but normal life to the peoples of Linebound. Lovecraftian horror hides beneath
The Floor and the
Machine Priests bring clockpunk to this fantastical age of discovery setting.
The Appearance of Infinity
Scale
Endless archipelagos of sky islands. Focus on the central area and begin to expand once a campaign starts. New things always await the players in the distance even if they are only a facade.
A Juxtaposition
Mood
Varies from place to place allowing for a larger variety of stories to make with the players. The players have impact on the world as a good tabletop game should. Focus on Neutral Neutral, Noble Neutral, and Noble Bright. In places where people have given up their agency, it falls towards grim and likely dark. Giving up your ability to change the world for the better, giving up hope, is no better than making it worse.
Triumph in the Face of Adversity
Theme
The peoples of Linebound overcome any obstacle placed before them. Structures adapted to violent rains, drudging the muck for food, declaring independence, gaining the rights afforded to other peoples, are a few examples. Not every obstacle has yet to be overcome, overcoming them creates conflict for the societies and for the players.
An important element of this triumph is the greatening of the world. Each generation builds on the knowledge and experience of the last. Where the parents or grandparents would have failed the young succeed because of what was passed down to them, even if they succeed by taking the opposite lesson they were taught. Magic is not fading like the works of Tolkien but growing, despite its elusiveness.
Colonialism
Conflict
This new age of exploration comes with the same dangers as it did on earth. The rights of indigenous people are trodden upon, diseases are carried to new places, a slippery slope leads to slavery, and more.
