Hunt of the Summer Fox

Never before had Emeri been selected to be the Summer Fox. The first girl to be the Summer Fox. But could she do it?   There was no time for such thoughts as they placed the mask upon her. It was too large for Emeri. This was it, she had to run. She started off in the direction the villagers pointed her.   Three of the children would be hiding or running. Probably the Doran brothers she thought as she ran around Tehrad's barn. She found one in the hay, Hayan, the younger twin. She pounced him and stole the rat mask.   Only two more.

History

The Hunt of the Summer Fox began in a small village where a real fox was expected to capture the rats that were plaguing the area. It succeeded and the festival became what it is today. Eventually, people replaced the fox and rats as these were not found in all areas and the captured fox was often too scared to move.   The ceremony continues once the fox has captured all of the rats. At this time the villagers gather for eating, drinking, and games. The food, drink, and games vary from region to region but some examples include cookies shape like foxes, wheat alcohol, and timber toss.

Components and tools

Several masks are used in the hunt. One for the Summer Fox and several for the rats. Each mask is made of wood, leather, and paint by local artists making each mask unique.   Tables, food, drink, and any materials for games and festivities that vary by region must be assembled before the start of the hunt.

Participants

Every person is invited to their local ceremony, even expected to participate. Travelers are always more than welcome as well. Children are picked to play the Summer Fox and the rats.

Observance

The ceremony is held during the 64th of each summer. Bad weather can delay the event.
