Gwana

Gwana is a plant almost as important to us as food. This plant has made its way into everything in our lives, except our stomachs that is.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Gwana is a succulent plant that grows many large arms. These arms stand up straight until new ones begin to grow in the center of the plant at which point they begin to fall toward the ground.   The arms are usually a pale green colour though are more saturated after the rainy season. The flower produced at the end of the plant's life can be purple, white, and occasionally red.

Genetics and Reproduction

A gwana plant can be grown from a single arm if planted and well watered.

Growth Rate & Stages

The arms of the gwana grow slowly. It takes about a year for the each ring of arms to fully develop assuming normal environmental conditions.   Eventually the gwana will stop producing new arms and a single flower will bloom in the center of the plant.

Ecology and Habitats

Gwana is native to Outpost 13. There is no winter season there, the plant will not survive prolonged exposure to near 0 temperatures and freezing temperatures kill it. The plant thrives in wet soil and is hardy to drought.

Biological Cycle

During the rainy season the plant will occasionally have arms rot and fall off. This causes the fallen arm to grow into a new plant.   Immediately after the rainy season is when the plant grows the fastest.   During a drought the arms will appear to shrivel slightly and stand up straight. It will easily return to normal when provided with water.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

When processed the plant provides long fibres almost like a string or thread. This is used to create many items including cloths, roofing, and rope.   The rare flower is used to create a unique spice and medicine.
