Orc's are generally seen at the most civilized of the
Cursedkin. They have spent hundreds of years slowly assimilating into other cultures by virtue of their extremely focused skillsets.
Their lives are generally shorter than other races, which leads most of them to have a strong focus on tight knit families and hyper focus on one specific skillset. Most Orcs are tradesmen. Typically becoming the most skilled blacksmiths, jewelers, or carpenters in their town. Their craft is their legacy. However, this does not limit Orcs to these specific roles. There have been many Orcs that have taken to social or political crafts such as spies, informants, and political advisors.
Orc's goal is normally not an accumulation of wealth or power, but more geared towards seeking recognition and finding purpose through their work. Most Orcs memorize and can list the most notable Orc families in each kingdom, as well as knowing their respective skillset. If Orcs are typically the best at each skillset, then those families would be "the best of the best" and would garner much appreciation and motivation from other Orcs who aspire to become as renowned as them.
Their short lives also cause most Orcs to be very straightforward in almost all aspects of their lives. Not much time for frivolities or distractions. Therefore, unproductive activities such as gambling, drinking, or adventuring are generally frowned upon in Orcish culture. Orcs will still regard other Orcs who participate in these activities, but will do so with far less respect than someone working to better themselves through a trade.
Basic Information
Orcs mature at a similar rate as
Humans. Though their lifespans are only about half as long. An old looking Orc is very rare, nearly non existent. As they do not age like humans after reaching adulthood. A 40 year old Orc looks just as young as a 20 year old Orc, but the former could pass away at any moment.
Additional Information
Orcs gain social renown from perfecting their respective skills. The type if skill is largely irrelevant, as long as they’re the best.
Easily recognizable by their squarish head shape and large jaw lines. Pointy, Elf-like ears but with a drastic curve either upwards or downwards rather than being straight, like the Elves.
Present in nearly every town and kingdom. There is no known settlement existing entirely of Orcs, but their culture is very important to them and is maintained in parallel with the culture of their place of residence.
Civilization and Culture
Orcs typically have a family name associated with their ancestor’s craft ie. Steelswords(weaponsmiths) or Shadowstep(spies or thieves)This doesn’t necessarily mean that that craft is what the individual Orc is trying to become a master of. Their first names are typically taken from the civilization their parents lived in. Orcs have a variety of different first name origins, therefore they always refer to each other by their full names until a relationship is kindled.
A master craftsman, swordsman, musician, or chef would be beautiful to an Orc. Perfection exemplified through hard work, training and skill is the main ideal for Orcs. Physical beauty is of little relevance.
Orcs typically seek to find a partner who’s skill complements their own. A musician may search for a woodworker. A swordsman may search for a blacksmith. A spy may seek a socialite.
One popular tradition is the concept of “Dah”. A “Dah” is a publicly pronounced challenge that one Orc makes towards another Orc of greater skill in a particular trade. Whenever a Dah is proclaimed, it must be accepted by both the one being challenged and the “Dah Tomah”. The Dah Tomah are a group of Orcs who specialize in memorizing the family names and notable individuals of every skill and trade. They, along with local citizens, must witness every Dah. Then, the Dah Tomah determines the relative skill of each participant so that a winner can be recognized. These events are a local spectacle with people traveling from far away lands to also witness masters competing.
