Halfling

Mr. Stevey Steve
Halfling kind, while making up less than 1% of all known humanoid races in Lind, are frequently seen by travelers and city dwellers alike. They exist in almost all facets of society but the majority spend their lives traveling, trading, and enjoying the comforts of life.   Halflings tend to travel in groups of one to two large families. Usually, they will have multiple caravans and animals accompanying them. They tend to stay near temperate, sunny locations where there is no real need to worry about strenuous environmental hazards.   Due to their peaceful nature, Halflings tend to rely on wit, cunning, and other deceptive means to solve their problems. Many of them associate strength with stupidity and intelligence with narcissism. However, this does not mean that they are weak or dumb. Halflings are quick to formulate a plan of action and precise at carrying out that plan when their families and friends are relying on them. They are perceptive and learn from the environment, people, and objects surrounding them.   Though not largely magical in nature, each family will have one or two offspring that are magically inclined and will rely on that magic to get them out of hard situations where their wit is failing them.   Being a largely collective race, Halflings are hardly ever seen alone. If not with their family caravan, they will almost always be with a group of likeminded adventurers or taking up extremely social professions such as a tavern keeper, inn keeper, or entertainer.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Small hair-covered humanoid. With generally disproportioned facial features that resemble almost animal like qualities. Some other races may hatefully refer to them as disfigured Beastkin and call them dog-face or pig-face.

Ecology and Habitats

Temperate, sunny regions with plenty of food to forage and little to no hostile wildlife.

Biological Cycle

No notable seasonal changes, but their hair thickness, length, and coverage varies based on the environment they inhabit. In hot climates, they may just look like a very short Human. In cold climates, they may be mistaken as a small Khenra  or Rashonka.

Additional Information

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Widespread, but in very small clusters of 20-30.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Most have two names consisting of a sur name and a family name with the sur name being an adjective in common like "Kali", meaning "happy", and the family name being associated with the ideal that the family holds highest like "Enaka", meaning "friend/friendship". In Halfling, the name would be Kali Enaka, meaning " A Happy Friend/Friendship" in common. Words, phrases, and dialects all vary from group to group so the names and meanings can basically be whatever you like.

Major Organizations

Honeycutt, The Hamlet of Helping Halflings (Triple H) in Zura.

Beauty Ideals

Halflings tend to associate hairlessness with civility, poise, and beauty.

Relationship Ideals

Since most Halflings move in small groups, each one normally has expectations for their companions to know what each of their roles are and they all trust each other to follow through with those roles. However, if one fails, the others will help to pick up the slack if the mishap was determined to be benign. If the failure was malevolent, there may be an intervention or the group will leave that person at the next settlement with food, gold, and other necessities to begin their new life. If the person becomes hostile, the group will simply restrain or sedate them until they reach a suitable settlement.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Halflingslanguage, known only as Halfling, common words and phrases, but with each group having their own subtle dialectical and etymological differences.

Culture and Cultural Heritage

Halflings commonly discuss religion like one would discuss an old friend. Most will reference Father Luck, an unknown deity common only among Halflings and Rashonka. All Halflings know of him, but most know nothing about him.    While not devotedly religious Halflings tend to prefer gods from the Ascended Pantheon. Each group of Halfling wanderers have their own ideals, morals, customs, and beliefs.

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

During the Cresting: Sky Tides, many Halflings participate in a week long party called "Un sa twee" to celebrate the coming of Summer. They get together with a couple other caravans in their area to make large bon fires, sing, dance, eat, and stare into the night sky. Their natural luckiness helping them not to succumb to madness, but rather be lulled to sleep through a haze of bliss until the effects ware off.   "Un sa twee" roughly meaning "It is pretty" is understood as a reference to life, summer, nature, togetherness, or happiness.

Common Taboos

Narcissism, brute force problem solving, ungratefulness/carelessness for nature and other beings.   Inviting oneself to a meal.

50 years
Conservation Status
Many civilized settlements are distrustful of Halfings and they are mostly discriminated against by all but Beastkin, though not as much as Cursedkin and Fae tend to be. Debluff, The City of Shrines in Zura has recently determined them to be going extinct and has become a safe haven, Honeycutt, for Halfling kind by demanding that they get the same respect as other Smallfolk.
