Lox gritted his teeth, dragging Mamarti's dead weight.
In the back, he fumed. They shot him in the back.
He settled his friend next to the tent and drew his revolver. Ozhe's boys knew they were coming, somehow. Their plan had crumbled almost instantly, but Lox was damn sure he wasn't going to go down without a fight.
He crept back to the corner, peering towards the rifleman on the far rooftop. The flash of light reflecting from the barrel and Lox snapped backwards as the bullet ripped a chunk of wood from the corner of the building he'd taken cover behind. He heard another rifle fire in the distance and he hoped Serefe was holding his own. Everything was happening too fast, he had to find a better position.
He turned, but too late. Another of Ozhe's men had already circled behind and before Lox could lift his pistol, the other man pulled the trigger. Pain wracked Lox's body and he crumbled to the ground. He clutched the ragged wound in his belly, resigned to his fate. A second pair of boots joined his attacker and then he heard her voice.
"Pelargi!" she hissed. "You promised not to kill him!"
"He ain't dead yet," the man replied.
