The Wandering Wastes
The Wandering Wastes, a vast and foreboding desert region in the far west of Ethera, are characterized by towering sand dunes, rocky outcrops, and deep canyons. It is said to be a place of great danger and mystery, where the ruins of once-great cities and ancient temples offer a glimpse into a forgotten past, but are fraught with peril.
To the east of the Wandering Wastes lie the Bright Mountains, a natural barrier between the desert and the fertile lands beyond. The mountains are home to fierce creatures such as mountain giants and dire wolves. In contrast, the desert itself is harsh and unforgiving, with a scorching sun and scarce water sources. Only a few scattered oases provide a lifeline for those who dare to venture into the wastes.
Brave adventurers still seek their fortune in the Wandering Wastes. Some search for lost treasures or ancient artifacts, while others hope to uncover the secrets of the powerful mages who once ruled the desert lands. Bandits and raiders roam the wastes, preying on unsuspecting travelers and caravans. Fierce sandstorms can whip up without warning, making navigation all but impossible.
The Wandering Wastes are also known as the ancestral home of the Drow, a subrace of Elves who were banished from the Fey Dominion long ago. They are rumored to have built many of the ancient ruins that now lie buried in the sands. Giant scorpions, sandworms, and hyenas are common sights in the desert, while many legends and myths abound about cursed tombs, lost cities, and powerful undead.
Despite the allure of adventure and fortune, the Wandering Wastes are a place to be avoided at all costs by most people. Travelers who venture too far into the desert often do not return, leaving their fate to be a mystery.
