Solaris dispute
Solaris is not what you have always been led to believe.
Technically the third establishment that bares the name Solaris, the country was for the period of about 15 years, under the leadership of a democratic rebellion. Said rebellion had, with the assistance of the bards local to the 'country' taken out the leaders of the previous kingdom and replaced them with lookalikes. Any city leader who would be sympathetic to the old regime was replaced as well.
The cause
The first kingdom of Solaris was formed from a collection of city states who wished to solidify their goals and intents under the one banner - namely the defense of the region under the belief that the human threat would return one day. As this faded into memory and national pride took root, the leadership became more and more hierarchical, with a glut of middle management and the introduction of taxes for the country. Given that power up to this point had been based on trade and the swapping of the owed with the price of payment, this rankled many a folk trying to get by off of what they could create and grow. If someone could get ahead simply by existing in a position of elected power, it led folk to believe that their own worth was... less.
The execution
It was the bards and the performers that executed the line of kings and their lackeys, for the sentiment of the populace was that while these new taxes stung, the line itself was still loved, and loyalty to the kingdom was at an all time high, especially with their friendly rivalry with Natare and the idea to construct a massive grown wall around the area of the country generally known to be 'theirs'. Those planning to line themselves up as the rebellion government persuaded the Grandmother of Whencis to 'trial' a wall inside the land of their town, in the hopes that if everything went south, they could always retreat to Whencis and bring their loyalists there for a scrap.
The interim.
After a series of well timed music performances, and private poetry readings, the kingdom was replaced, actors trading their services for the ability to pretend they were in charge. Those in the newly elected middle positions 'came to misfortune' as performances were made to fake a series of deaths over the next few years, as the actors were paid handsomely to get out of dodge. The rebellion government set itself up out of Whencis, the extra foot traffic hidden by the nature of the bustling trade town.
The collapse.
It was nothing more than one of the good ones learning the wrong secret at the wrong time to bring the whole thing down. Given the fickle nature of the bard lifestyle, and the fact that under the rebellion government, the general bard lifestyle had suffered, it was not hard to hire a bard with motivation to get the information needed. And then a few combat mages and a public revelation that the new king was the completely lost heir all along, and the new kingdom was reborn. That the heads of the old rebellion were soon a mess of sticky ends was just one great coincidence.
And the population of Solaris never knew.
What an absolutely fascinating period of history. I wonder what would happen if it ever came to light.
